Which Is Better, Dog Repellent Spray Or An Electronic Dog Repeller?

Dog attacks are much more common than people may realize and as such people (especially deliverymen, mailmen, runners, etc…) need to be prepared to thwart an attack by a potentially dangerous canine. Two of the more popular products for repelling a dog are dog repellent spray and the electronic dog repeller. But which of these is better? That is a question that might not be so easily answered until we evaluate exactly what each of these self-defense items really are and what each of these devices actually do.
First let’s start with dog spray and explaining exactly what that is. Dog repellent spray is just that, a spray that repels dogs. The truth of the matter is that this spray is nothing more than pepper spray, the same exact ingredients found in pepper spray for humans. It’s extremely effective against both humans and dogs because the spray works as an extreme inflammatory that causes severe burning and swelling in the mucus membranes of the dog that is sprayed and that can not only cause extreme discomfort but actually temporarily blind an attacking dog (due to the swelling of the eyes). The only drawback with dog repellent spray is that it has a limited range of about 6-8 feet and that is pretty close quarters for a dog that is in the midst of trying to attack you. Plus it does cause immense pain, albeit temporary, to the dog and so one should be confident that the dog that you are spraying was indeed a threat to your personal safety and that the spraying was justified in that sense.
The electronic dog repeller is an entirely different self-defense tool and works not by emitting an inflammatory spray but by emitting an extremely high decibel sound that is also very high frequency and hence can only be heard by canines. This device causes enough discomfort and confusion with its alarm that dogs naturally exit the area that the sound is coming from. It causes no severe pain, swelling or harms a dog in any way, shape, or form. It has a much longer range than dog spray and can be effective up to 50 yards away, a much more comfortable distance than the 6-8 feet afforded by dog repellent spray. However, there is a major drawback with this particular device and that is that they just aren’t as effective at truly subduing an attacking canine as is dog spray. If a dog is very hard of hearing or just attacks in spite of the discomfort caused by this device’s alarm then you are in serious trouble. Whereas with pepper spray the dog is going to feel immense pain and possibly even be blinded temporarily while its eyes are swollen.
So please take all of these facts in account when deciding upon which form of dog repeller is ultimately right for you.

Every Runner Should Own A Dog Repeller

I would consider myself a 'runner' in that I strap on a pair of running shoes and set the streets of my neighborhood ablaze with my 9 minute miles about 3 times a week. I live in a middle class neighborhood and it’s one that I won’t hesitate to run at night as it’s a neighborhood I consider relatively safe. However when I do run at night (which is my usual running time as I work during the day and spend time with the family after work) I always make sure to bring 2 very important pieces of protection with me. One is my reflective vest so that cars can better see me in the dark and the second piece of protection is my electronic dog repeller. I used to run with my lab, Kody, and even as he approached old age he was still able to run faster than I and that leads me to believe there aren’t too many wild dogs that I could outrun even if my life depended on it. I have never been attacked by a dog while running and I’d certainly like to keep it that way.
The electronic dog repeller works by emitting a very loud sound that causes such discomfort to the dog that it retreats from the noise. Fortunately for your neighbors the sound is of such a high frequency that it cannot be detected by the human ear. The dog repeller also comes equipped with a flashing strobe which can further be used to confuse the canine to the point where it inherently flees from the area.
As I said, I myself have a dog, a yellow lab named Kody and he’s almost like another kid, in fact we have had him longer than we’ve had our three children. I’ve always loved dogs and as such would never intentionally try to harm one and that is what is so great about the electronic dog repeller, it is a humane instrument that causes the dog no harm. Unlike dog repeller spray that actually causes a dog great pain, albeit temporary, the electronic dog repeller works simply by confusing the dog and causing it enough audible discomfort to exit your area. The Electronic Dog Repeller Is A Very Misunderstood Tool

Spending the vast majority of my professional life in the non-lethal self-defense industry I have witnessed a great deal of confusion as to the products I work with and have read a great deal of misinformation about those same products. The items I am referring to include tasers, stun devices, pepper spray, mace, personal alarms, steel batons, animal repellent spray and a host of other highly effective, non-lethal, life-saving devices. But amongst all of these devices there may be none more misunderstood than the electronic dog repeller.

When people hear the words ‘electronic dog repeller’, for whatever reason, Michael Vick-like images appear in most people’s minds, as if this device is one that is used to torture misbehaving canines when in fact nothing could be farther from the truth. First of all I am a huge dog lover; just ask my 70 pound yellow lab Kody.  I would never in a million years sell or recommend a device meant to hurt these gentle creatures. The sad and unfortunate fact though is that not all canines are as gentle and loving as my Kody. Some dogs are vicious and dangerous by way of being neglected and mistreated by scumbag dog owners who have no right owning a dog. For these rare cases we need to be able to effectively protect ourselves but at the same time be able to do so with a device that is humane and cannot possibly hurt a dog and that is what the electronic dog repeller is all about.

This device uses the latest ultrasonic technology to repel and prevent the approach of unwanted dogs or dogs whose intent is questionable at best. It uses a frequency that is too high to be heard by human beings and is audible only to the dog. Again this high frequency sound causes the dog enough discomfort to simply make the dog steer clear of you but does not cause that dog any pain or inflict any harm in any way whatsoever and it is effective up to about 40 feet. It also comes with a super bright flashing strobe that can be used to further confuse and temporarily blind an unwanted dog that may be headed your way. This strobe can also be used as a flashlight which can always come in handy. These devices are ideal for those that take jogs or walks (I am more the walking variety) at night and may have dogs in the area they know to be a tad unfriendly.

There is also a training setting on these devices and I can tell you from experience that using these as a training tool can be a very effective way of humanely training any dog. I hope this has helped clear up any misconceptions people may have about this wonderful device.

The Electronic Dog Repeller Can Be A Wonderful And Humane Training Tool

In the past, I have made quite a few blog entries concerning the importance of always being prepared and protected from dog attack. I find the need to do so no less important today although I have learned quite a bit about one defense tool I talk about quite a bit and that is the electronic dog repeller. I still find this tool to be a very useful tool of self-defense against potentially dangerous canines but I rarely mention its ability to humanely and effectively train dogs as well. The electronic dog repeller does not work by causing a dog pain but by emitting a high frequency noise, audible only to canines, and flashing strobe which would normally cause an approaching dog temporary confusion and mild discomfort in the hopes of making that dog turn and exit the area. This same high frequency noise and to a lesser degree the flashing strobe can be used to help train a dog and in a sense deter it from any unwanted actions it may be taking.

I want to stress again that I myself have a yellow lab, Kody, that has been with my family and I for a decade now and I love that furry lug like he is one of my own. The electronic dog repeller is not a shock collar and, again, does not cause the animal pain. I believe in raising an obedient and respectful dog but training the dog in a firm but loving way that does not include using pain as a deterrent. I did not even know electronic dog repellers existed when my wife and I brought Kody home as a puppy back in 2002. Had we known of this tool’s existence I think we could have saved quite a bit of time and aggravation on both our parts and had ourselves a well-trained, very obedient dog in much less time.

The electronic dog repeller comes with 2 settings and one is considered a “training setting” but neither the regular setting, that is meant to deter dogs, or the “training setting” which is emits a slightly less audible sound harm the dog in any way, shape or form. In the case of an unknown and potentially dangerous canine approaching it merely causes enough irritation that the dog exits the area. In a situation where a dog is being trained it merely causes enough irritation that the dog stops chewing on the couch (or whatever action it may be taking that you wish it would not) and understands that that is unacceptable behavior.

So please consider the electronic dog repeller not only as a measure of self defense but also as a potential training tool that is both humane and extremely effective.

This Thanksgiving Let’s All Be Thankful For The Electronic Dog Repeller

Thanksgiving is a time to sit back with friends and family, stuff ourselves with delicious home cooked meals, and reflect on all of the many things we are thankful for, I for one am thankful that I am not bleeding to death from an open and gaping neck wound given to me by a rabid dog during a random and senseless act of canine violence. Thankfully for me, and others who share the same passion for not being torn to shred by pitbulls, we have electronic dog repellers to keep us safe. You would have to be a real turkey (you like how I through that pun in there?) to walk the streets of any neighborhood without carrying some form of self defense against dogs that may mean you harm and depending on the neighborhood in which you reside, the need for such a device may be an absolute must have item.

Humans are not the only ones who can be thankful for such a device as the electronic dog repeller either. Dogs too should rejoice in the fact that we humans have designed an effective means of self defense against canines that does not involve harming the dog in any way shape or form. You see the electronic dog repeller does not work by spraying a pepper spray into the dogs face but simply by emitting an extremely loud, high decibel alarm and super bright flashing strobe light that both work in conjunction to frighten and confuse the dog. Frightening and confusing a dog are much better than maiming or killing the dog in my opinion, especially if we are unsure of an approaching dogs intent. Let us say for example that a kindly pitbull has somehow gotten out of the yard it was in and is now wandering the streets and has accidentally crossed your path. That may be a scary situation for some but it isn’t necessarily a life threatening one if the pitbull in question is a good dog and means you no harm. If your only defense was pepper spray or a firearm you may not know you’ve seriously injured or killed a kindly beast until it is too late. With an electronic dog repeller you can safely avoid close contact because the high decibel alarm can be effective up to 40 feet, which is also much further than pepper spray can be effective. These devices are so humane in fact that they come with a training setting that can be used to effectively and humanely train your own dog. I think it is safe to say that we can all be thankful for this little piece of technology.

My Favorite Thing About Jogging Is The ‘Not Getting Bit By A Dog’ Thing

I love jogging so much. I really enjoy getting up early before the sun is even up, stepping out into the cold air of an early autumn morning and just hitting the streets of my neighborhood for 20 minutes. I may not be as fleet of foot as I was in my twenties but I can still run a 5k in under 25 minutes. One thing that has really helped me stay in reasonably good shape all these years has to be the supplementation, good diet and most of all not having my throat lunged at by a ravenous pit-bull.

Supplementation and a proper diet have allowed me to receive all of the various nutrients a body needs to run at peak performance. Not being bitten in the head and/or neck region by a 95 pound Rottweiler has really helped me not bleed to death in agonizing pain and terror.

Stretching has also played a key role in helping me to stay young and not be chased down and tackled by a huge mastiff looking to bite himself a big old piece of jogger neck.

Proper equipment is also vital. I am pretty cheap most of the time and certainly one to buy generic if it makes fiscal sense o do so but one thing I will not skimp on is running shoes. First of all a decent pair of running shoes will last 3 times as long as a cheap pair and they will also help you run faster should a huge Cujo-looking beast chase you down to get some jogger giblets.

Hydration is also key when trying to maintain a high level of fitness, especially in the summer months when you are sweating more profusely and dehydration is a bigger threat. Proper hydration also prevents muscle cramps which can be a huge problem for runners of all ages. Water is great but I like to make sure I drink plenty of sports drinks that replace key nutrients and minerals that are lost when we sweat, like sodium for example. The summer months are also when you are more likely to be viciously attacked by a dog so please stay hydrated so that you don’t cramp up while fleeing for your life.

Last but not least I always make sure there is one item I bring along on all of my runs and that is an electronic dog repeller. Nothing is more effective at stopping the approach of any shady looking canines when out for your morning run. The electronic dog repeller works by emitting a super high frequency noise, audible only to dogs, that works to confuse and deter the dog. It also has a super bright flashing strobe that works in the same way as the high frequency noise in that it confuses and deters the canine. I assure you that although these are effective tools in avoiding unruly dogs they are also quite safe for man and beast alike and so much so that the electronic dog repeller even has a training setting that can be used to humanely and effectively train dogs.

So please, next time you head out for a jog around the neighborhood please remember to bring along an electronic dog repeller so that you can help assure a safe arrival home after your run.

Animal Repellents Don't Get Much More Important Than the Electronic Dog Repeller

Animal repellents come in more flavors than ice cream. You have repellents for bear, raccoon, possum, rabbit, cat, squirrel, skunk, chipmunk, groundhog and deer. All of these animal repellents certainly serve a purpose but how important are they? Bear spray is without question as important an animal repellent as will ever exist but only practical if you are actually going to be in an area where there are bears. So unless you are an avid camper/hiker you may very well never need bear spray and hence its importance to you personally is non-existent. With that said, if you are an avid camper, please for the love of all that is holy pick yourself up some Guard Alaska bear spray before you head back out to the wilderness. The repellents for the other animals I listed are, once again, purposeful but by no means would I consider them incredibly ‘important’. Keeping your gardens looking nice and raccoons out of your garbage is all well and good but it’s not nearly as important as keeping your throat out of the jaws of a wild Pitbull. That is why, in my opinion, there aren’t many animal repellents that are more important than a good old fashioned electronic dog repeller. A device doesn’t get more important than one that keeps you from potentially dying in excruciating pain.

One thing I need to note about these electronic dog repellers is that they can be very effective but they are at the same time very humane for the animal. We don’t need to be out and about firing off the dog repeller at every dog we see in an attempt to be preemptively protecting ourselves. This device simply flashes a super bright strobe that confuses and deters the dog while at the same time emitting a super high decibel (high enough that it is inaudible to the human ear) alarm that is uncomfortable enough to the dog that it chooses to walk away before it can get close enough to even consider an attack, up to 40 feet.

Let me also note that although these electronic dog repellers are as effective as any non-lethal device from that range they are still not 100% and it would behoove you not to find yourself in a situation where you would need it in the first place. These repellers are to be carried and used just in case a situation arises. I am a fairly avid runner (although I use the word ‘run’ very loosely) and haven’t gone out running in my neighborhood without one of these repellers in months. I am not overly concerned that I will ever need it but there are a few canines in the area that have questionable intentions and so I feel much better having it on me. I strongly suggest that any other avid runners do the same if only for their own peace of mind.
