Guard Alaska Bear Spray Is An Animal Repellent You Might Not Be Able To Live Without

Enjoying the great outdoors is something everyone should experience. Camping is a great way to get exercise, fresh air and can be a wonderful bonding experience between friends and family alike. Many of the camping destinations in the United States can be visited without necessitating animal repellents of any kind (unless you consider bug repellent). However, much like with humans and their pepper spray, we will fully recover after about 20 minutes and the spray will leave no permanent effects. Camping Without Bear Spray? Just Pour Honey All Over Yourself And Charge A Mamma Bear's Cubs

Are you planning on camping in an area that has even the slightest chance of you seeing a bear? Are you planning on doing this camping without having bear spray of any kind on you at all times? If the answer is yes I have another idea for you, why don’t you just douse yourself in honey or hang a raw steak around your neck (or both) and just go charging at the first bear cub you see. It is obvious from the fact that you are not bringing bear spray on your trip that you are the type that throws caution, as well as common sense and basic safety measures, to the wind.

It should be obvious that I am being extremely facetious and by no means should you ever go near a bear and certainly never so much as entertain the idea of approaching a bear’s cub unless your goal is to be mauled to death. As ridiculous as the opening paragraph of this blog was I find it only slightly more ridiculous than even so much as considering the thought of camping without bear spray present. It just doesn’t make any sense not to bring along bear repellent of some kind if there is any chance of seeing a bear where you are camping and when you consider how cheap bear repellent spray is and how easy it is to secure it makes the notion of camping without it that much more ridiculous.

The best thing about bear spray is the simple fact that it is extremely effective, some studies have even shown it to be as effective, if not more effective, than most firearms in thwarting a bear attack. The second best thing about bear spray is that, unlike a firearm, the creature does not have to die in order to save yourself. Let’s remember that we are in the bears home and in almost any attack we are not dealing with a blood-thirsty, man-eating creature but a confused and potentially frightened bear that is doing what it thinks it must to protect itself or it’s offspring (very much like most humans would).

Bear spray works exactly like pepper spray does on humans, in fact the active ingredients are exactly the same. And just as pepper spray is extremely effective on a human attacker so is bear spray on a bear attacker. Bear repellent spray causes intense, but temporary, pain and swelling in the bear’s mucus membranes which can also cause temporary blindness as it can with humans. This gives you ample time to exit the premises immediately and should also have the bear doing the exact same thing in most cases.

So please, for your sake and for the sake of your loved ones, always take bear spray with when going camping in any area where a bear has even the slightest chance of being seen and for the love of all that is holy have it on you at all times. Bear repellent will do you no good if you don’t have it when a bear is ready to attack.

Camping Is Best Enjoyed While Not Being Attacked By Bears

Camping has always been my favorite way to spend my free time. There are just so many wonderful things about camping that I love, the fresh air, preparing fresh caught salmon, the bonfires at night, sleeping under a starlit sky and my absolute favorite, not being dragged out of my tent and mauled to death by bears. To enjoy fresh air I need only bring myself (although quitting smoking has helped in this endeavor as well). To enjoy the salmon I bring the appropriate cooking utensils, fishing pole and tackle box. To enjoy the bonfires I need to remember to bring along waterproof matches and firewood. And to enjoy all of these things without having my camping trip cut short via bear mauling I always make sure to bring along Guard Alaska bear spray.

Bear attacks are not all that common but they do happen and it doesn’t make any sense to ‘play the odds’ and just hope you aren’t confronted by a bear while camping. If you are going to be travelling into areas where there is even the remotest chance of seeing one then please do you and your loved ones a favor by bringing along a proven bear spray. I know Guard Alaska works and I am sure there are some other brands that do as well but the important part is that you have it with you at all times. Bringing along bear spray and having it in the trunk of your car is not going to do you any good if you are out hiking and accidentally find yourself between a half-ton grizzly and her cubs. In all seriousness though it always astounds and saddens me when I read about a bear attack when I know how easy it can be to avoid one. A bear attack of any magnitude, even the ones that don’t prove fatal, can be immensely tragic for not only the victim and the victim’s family but also many times for the bear as it is often hunted down and killed after an attack on a human. Bears for the most part are not out looking for humans to attack, they attack because they feel that they are in danger or that their cubs are in danger. I always feel a deep regret for the bear when it has to die because of what really boils down to the human’s inability to plan or prepare properly before camping in bear populated areas.

So pretty please with sugar on top do not even consider camping in bear populated areas without bringing along, and carrying at all times, a bear spray like Guard Alaska.

What Should I Bring Camping If I Hate Being Mauled By Bears?

I don’t know how many times I have been asked “What should I bring camping if I hate being mauled to death by half ton grizzly bears?”. Okay, in fairness I have never actually been asked that question and it is pretty ludicrous to assume I ever will but in my opinion it would be no more ludicrous than actually going camping in bear populated areas without bear spray.




Every now and then I will stumble upon a tragic story of some unfortunate soul who was severely and permanently scarred, both physically and mentally, by a black or grizzly bear while camping in bear populated areas without proper protection from said bears. What makes these stories even more tragic is that avoiding such catastrophic events is so very simple. Anyone that wants to camp, hike, or spend any time in bear populated areas needs to purchase and carry at all times a bear spray that is proven effective. I can only attest to the proven effectiveness of two such sprays and those two are Guard Alaska brand and a bear repellent spray from Mace. I have seen videos of both of these sprays in action and after viewing both videos I would personally be confident in either. There may very well be other brands out there that are just as effective but as I have not seen proof of any others I can not in good conscience recommend other brands at this time.



Bear spray works in very much the same way as does pepper sprays meant to thwart the attack of human assailants, in fact the active ingredient in both bear spray and human pepper spray are exactly the same, Oleoresin Capsicum. More or less Oleoresin Capsicum is the thin that gives hot peppers their “hotness”. Of course we are also talking about this ingredient in a much more concentrated form than you will find in even the hottest of peppers. When concentrated Oleoresin Capsicum hits the mucus membranes (eyes, nose, throat, etc…) of just about any of God’s creatures it will not only swell those membranes and cause temporary blindness but also an immense burning sensation that causes such temporary pain that the animal will almost always retreat. This will give you enough time to exit the area safely and hopefully in a hurry.



The last thing I’ll say about bringing along a bear spray when camping is that it absolutely must be on your person at all times. If it is not then having it in the first place is of little use as a bear attack is not usually something that we get advanced notice of and I don’t know many wild bears that will wait patiently while you search your tent. So please secure said bear spray and for the love of all that is holy have that bear spray in an easily accessible location (like a holster) at all times.

If You’re Headed to Yellowstone and Don’t Want to Die You Might Want to Buy Bear Spray

I absolutely love camping and as most of my camping is done in the Midwest I am a little saddened, as I always am this time of year, that the camping season is more or less coming to an end for 2011. Although in some ways I find this to be the best time of the year to go camping as long as you are prepared for what could potentially be a very cold night. I have camped in Yellowstone on three separate occasions and the weather there is very comparable to the weather here in Chicago so when I do go to Yellowstone it’s easy for me to prepare for the occasion. Here are some oft overlooked items you do not want to forget to bring along when you are camping in Yellowstone National Park (or anywhere else for that matter).

Lighter – Do I need to explain why a lighter may be useful? You may also want to bring along some waterproof matches just in case it rains or you take an unexpected and accidental dip.

Warm Clothing – This may seem like enough of a no-brainer as fall approaches but even in the middle of July it is best to bring warm clothes as nature has a tendency to not care if you are prepared and can drop the temperature significantly once that sun goes down.

Garbage Bags – An often overlooked and amazingly versatile piece of equipment. It can keep clothes dry, double as a tent if need be or simply used as a poncho should a heavy rain hit while you are camping or hiking.

Map – Much like the lighter, do I need to explain its usefulness?

Flashlight – You would be surprised how many people forget this item and how unbelievably unnerving it can be when you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of a cloudy pitch-dark night without a flashlight in hand.



This brings us to our most overlooked item in the history of Yellowstone camping…



Guard Alaska Bear Spray – I don’t have any official statistics or facts to back this statement up but I’d be willing to say that about 90% of the people camping in Yellowstone right now do not have this item and let me tell you that it could very well be the most important item on this list and one that could literally be a life saving device if the need arises.

Chances are very good that you may not even see a bear while camping in Yellowstone and even better that you will never have to defend yourself against a bear attack but tell this to bear attack survivors or families of those that have lost loved ones to bear attack and I assure you it will offer them no solace. Bear spray is one of those items that just absolutely has to be on your person when you are camping in bear populated areas. I always give these bear spray blogs stupid titles in the hopes that it will catch someone’s eye and get the message to them before they themselves go camping. So please do yourself and your loved ones a favor and buy bear spray before you head off to Yellowstone to go camping.

Do You Really Need To Buy Bear Spray Before Going Camping?

Do you really need to buy bear spray before you go camping in an area that has even the slightest chance of seeing a bear? No, technically you don’t need to do anything. You don’t need to bring a tent but you better hope the bugs aren’t too bad and it doesn’t rain on you whilst you sleep. While you are at it I wouldn’t wear a seatbelt while you are driving to your camping destination. I mean legally that is breaking the law but you don’t need to wear a seat belt as the car will drive just fine whether or not you’re wearing one. Also, I wouldn’t let any friends or family know that you’ll be out of town on a camping trip when you go. Just let them freak out and worry themselves sick and possibly even report you as a missing person to the local authorities. I mean it would be nice if you put your loved ones at ease by alerting them to the fact that you’ll be out of town but you don’t need to tell anyone anything.

Do you see the point I am trying to make here? Chances are very good that if you go camping in bear populated areas you would probably survive just fine without bear spray as fatal bear attacks are pretty rare, even in areas with heavy bear populations. Will you wear your seat belt when you drive to your camping destination though? Because fatal car accidents are much more common than bear attacks but still relatively rare when compared to the number of people that drive a car each and every day. Your chances of being injured in a car accident is less than 1% each time you get in a car, but you still wear the belt, right? Why? Because you have common sense, that’s why. The same common sense should apply when deciding which items to bring camping.

I always bring a first aid kit even though I have never used it and I always will bring it just in case. Why on Earth would I risk being mauled to death by a half ton grizzly bear when all I have to do is go online and pick up a bottle of bear spray and make sure I have it on me when I’m camping? It just makes zero sense to me and it always kills me when I hear stories of people being attacked by a bear while they are camping in an area where they knew full well a bear had the possibility of showing up. The last fatal bear attack in Yellowstone happened earlier this year and the unfortunate soul who lost his life did not have bear spray. Of course it is impossible to tell if things would have been different had he had bear spray but I can assure you that the stuff works and if he did have bear spray he would have drastically improved his chances of living to see another day.

So please, for your sake and the sake of the people that care about you buy bear spray if you are going to go camping and make sure that you have it on your person at all times. Also, wear your seat belt.

Buy Bear Spray If You Want Animal Repellents You Can’t Live Without

When my family and I go camping we more often than not choose the northern woods of Wisconsin. I love the area because it really is secluded, beautiful and still relatively close to our hometown of Chicago. When we head off to enjoy the great outdoors my wife is always sure to bring the necessary bug repellents as the mosquitoes, fleas, mites, ticks and chiggers can be abundant this time of year and in that area of the country. Ill take bee stings to both eye balls (that’s a pleasant though isn't it?) over a black bear attack any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Many insect bites can be a real nuisance and should certainly be avoided but a bear attack is very likely an event that you only get to experience once as you could very likely die or at least be injured so badly that another trip to the north woods would be straight out of the question.

Many people have asked me if this stuff actually works and to these people I reply "have you heard of YouTube?” I ask because you can view quite a few videos that more than prove bear spray's effectiveness. Also, with bear spray you needn't worry about having to carry a firearm that can be every bit as dangerous to you and your family as an actual bear. Also, Guard Alaska bear spray (and I assume just about any brand) does not contain any ozone depleting chemicals as the active ingredient in bear spray is the same in most defensive sprays, peppers.

Must Have Animal Repellents: Guard Alaska Bear Spray

Let’s face it; there are not too many wild animals that we need to be concerned with in North America these days. Most of us live in areas where the wild animals we encounter consist of squirrels, raccoons, birds, chipmunks and maybe the occasional Garter snake. Not only are these animals going to run from you in skittish terror the second you approach them but even if one was to attack I think it is safe to say that an able bodied human could probably survive a squirrel attack relatively unharmed (unless of course the fury little assailant has rabies). There is one animal however that I see sometimes when I go camping up north and it is a truly beautiful yet terrifying creature. It is an animal that I make sure I am prepared for and that animal is a bear. I have seen black bears on a handful of occasions when camping in northern Wisconsin and although I’ve never been in real imminent danger of one charging I am wise enough to understand that it can be just a matter of time before I find myself in a life-threatening situation with one of these beautiful beasts. This understanding is what has led me to always make sure I pack (and more importantly carry) a can of Guard Alaska bear spray whenever I go camping or hiking in bear populated areas. For me personally, it just makes sense to take the extra 2 minutes to pack the bear spray when the risk of not taking it could mean me being mauled to death by a 400 pound black bear.

If You Plan On Camping In Yellowstone National Park Please Buy Bear Spray Online

I was quite saddened to hear about the fatal bear attack at Yellowstone National Park this past week. I’m saddened because once again a life has been lost that a little planning and prevention could have very easily spared. A 57 year old man and his wife were out hiking in the park and stumbled upon a mother grizzly and her cubs. One of the main reasons that bear attacks occur is because a mother grizzly feels her cubs are threatened. This bear did not take the man’s life because she was a blood-thirsty man killer. She attacked the man because she thought that her cubs were in some sort of danger. Unfortunately neither this man nor his wife was carrying bear spray on them and as a result they had no means of stopping the bear from charging. The Yellowstone Park rangers even said that bear spray would have very likely stopped the bear attack. If there is any positive note from this story it is that the wife was able to escape a similar fate by playing dead and survived physically unharmed. I say “physically” because she is obviously emotionally destroyed and will never be the same. When I think about the fact that a very inexpensive bottle of bear spray could have prevented this I truly get a sinking feeling in my stomach. Had this man and/or his wife had taken a few minutes to go online and purchase a can of bear spray and kept it in their pack he may very well still be here to take his wife on future hiking trips. Very few of us will ever understand the sheer terror of a bear attack and the pain involved with surviving one. Just tell the bear that you misplaced the bear repellent and it would be greatly appreciated if it could sit still and postpone ripping your throat out while you locate the spray. Tip #4 – Keep your campsite clean. Store food in your vehicle or hung up in a tree at least 10 feet off of the ground. Certainly do not leave food in the tent with you as the smell of food could attract a bear. Waking up next to a hungry wild bear is a bad thing.

Any Bear Spray for Camping Should Be Safe for the Bear as Well

I hate being mauled to death by bears. Actually, in fairness, I have never actually been mauled to death by bears but I can’t think of a more unpleasant way to spend a weekend than to be attacked by a frightened bear. When you are camping, hiking or just spending some quality time outdoors it is always a good idea to have some form of protecting yourself should you be spending those good times in an area where bears may be present. Let us not only look out for ourselves though as bears deserve our compassion and respect as well.

I think bears are one of the most misunderstood animals in the world and I think much of that has to do with the fact that they are one of the few animals in North America that could potentially pose a real threat to the life of a human being. Because of this fact I think we see some very bogus stories circulate about bear attacks and oftentimes exactly what transpired in an actual bear attack is blurred from what actually occurred. Let us have some compassion and understanding for these beautiful creatures. Here are some facts about bear attacks that you may not know…

• You are 120 times more likely to die of a bee sting than die of a black bear attack.
• You are 45 times more likely to die from a dog attack than a black bear attack
• 1 out of 1,000,000 (that’s 1 million) will ever kill someone. (Humans have a much higher rate of murderers than do bears).
• There are about 750,000 black bears in North America, on average there is less than one black bear killing per year.
• You are 60,000 times more likely to be killed by a human than you are by a black bear.
Grizzly bears are vastly outnumbered by black bears and do cause a bit more of a threat than do black bears as they tend to be more aggressive. The vast majority (and I’m talking about almost all) of black bear encounters end with the black bear leaving the premises or the human killing the bear (if it is during hunting season).

That is why I am such a huge advocate of Guard Alaska bear spray, because it helps protect not only yourself but the bear as well. Bear spray works exactly like pepper spray does for humans. The spray causes an intense burning sensation in the bears eyes, nose, throat and lungs but leaves the creature with no ill side effects after 30 minutes or so. It is also completely safe for the environment as it contains no harmful, ozone-depleting chemicals, safe for you, the bear and the environment? What more could you ask for?

Guard Alaska Bear Spray For Camping, Because Bear Attacks Are Not Cool.

Bear spray and camping go together like smores and campfires. One just doesn’t belong without the other and one of the major reasons for that is because being mauled by a quarter ton grizzly is not at all cool. Seriously, I enjoy camping and I’ve seen bears and one thing I know for sure is that it would be most unenjoyable if any of these bears I’ve had the pleasure of viewing in the wild were to bite me in the neck region. I’m fairly certain that would damper an otherwise wonderful weekend. I know what you’re thinking, “but what if the bear just clamped his ultra-powerful jaws of razor-sharp teeth onto your torso or leg perhaps?” The answer is still no. It’s not so much I’m worried about my neck exclusively, I’m just not that hip on putting any part of my body in the mouth of a Northern Wisconsin Black bear.

I’ve discussed this topic with friends and I have yet to find any that disagree with me about the whole bear mauling thing. We are all pretty much in agreement that having humongous razor-sharp claws rip through our faces, exposing the skull underneath would be the polar opposite of a “good time”. That is why we all agree and adhere to 1 basic rule while camping and I’m going to capitalize this so it will hopefully sink in…

IF YOU ARE CAMPING ANYWHERE THERE MAY BE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CHANCE OF A BEAR BEING PRESENT YOU SHOULD HAVE GUARD ALASKA BEAR SPRAY ON YOU AT ALL TIMES.

This is an extremely simple rule to follow and one that could very realistically save your life one day. It just doesn’t make sense not to bring along protection from a creature that you have almost no chance at all of fending off with your bare hands. Also keep in mind that bears won’t follow basic rules of fighting etiquette. Before engaging in hand-to hand combat with a bear you could certainly tell it “hey bear, let’s do this thing but no eye gouging, okay?”, but I doubt very seriously that it will listen. It’s pretty much just going to go for the throat.

As always I kid and say ridiculous things with the hope that you remember these bits of advice that I give you. Please do yourself and your loved ones a huge favor and remember to carry bear spray if you are going to go camping in an area that could find you face-to-face with a bear.
