Running is great for the mind, body and spirit. Studies show that running can raise your levels of good cholesterol, increase lung capacity, lower your risk of blood clots and boost your immune system. Studies have also shown that running can lower the risk of many types of cancer and the risk of having a stroke. It can help burn fat and lose weight; in fact next to cross country skiing it is the most effective exercise in terms of calories burned per minute. Running can help boost your confidence by helping you attain your physical goals. Running can help regulate sleep patterns and we all know how important sleep can be for your mind, body and overall mood. Running naturally releases endorphins which can lift your mood and help fight stress and all of the nasty health problems often associated with that stress. Running secretes hormones that can help naturally treat depression. In fact it always troubles me to see anti-depression drugs so widely prescribed but rarely with a prescription to get out and try running. Sign up for a 5k sometime and look at the mood of the people milling about before and after the race. I think one thing you’ll find in common is that all of these people probably seem happy.
With all of the benefits of running in mind they mean nothing if you aren’t actually protected when you go out for a run. I myself often run by the lakeshore of Lake Michigan and it’s a beautiful scene with the sun setting over the lake on my one side and the city skyline on my other. I know though that beautiful surroundings do not prevent bad things from happening and certainly do not make me immune to crime. Especially running at night in the 3rd most populated city in America I need to be ever watchful and ready to defend myself at all times. For me this means always carrying on my person a keychain alarm. A keychain alarm is nothing more than a small, handheld alarm that I can activate if I ever get into trouble while running along the trail. It’s extremely loud and extremely effective in deterring an attack as well as drawing the attention of others.
I know a couple of female friends that run with small stun devices and the main difference between a stun device and a keychain alarm is that a stun device will actually physically impair an attacker and might be a good thing for women to carry in their purse or while they are out for a jog as oftentimes their attacker may be a male who is bigger and stronger than they are. Either way a runner, man or woman, should always be prepared to defend themselves in any situation and a keychain alarm or stun gun can certainly help there.

Why Colleges Should Hand Out Keychain Alarms To All Students
A college campus should be a lively environment where young students, eager to learn, are prepared for life after college and for their role in plying their trade to make the world a better place to live and more often than not college campuses are just that. However, the reality is that there is no place on Earth that is completely immune to criminal activity and a college campus is certainly no exception. There is certainly no shortage of stories about students being accosted while walking back to their dorms at night. Almost every university I can think of has at least taken the precautionary measure of installing emergency phones about their campus and kudos to them for that. Those emergency phones do have their limitations though and are not always practical. For one, those phones are staggered many yards apart and a helpless female student walking home at night might not be able to reach the closest phone if she is suddenly attacked. There is a very easy solution to this problem however and one that can be easily and affordably remedied by simply distributing keychain alarms to each and every student (female or male). My oldest child just turned 7 and so I don’t yet have to worry about her going off to college and being away from the family but when she does I can assure you she will at the very least have in her possession one of these personal alarms.
Personal alarms like the keychain alarm are great because they are completely safe and can cause absolutely no physical harm whatsoever. That is not to say, however, that they are not effective. On the contrary, keychain alarms can prove to be wildly effective and that is because they are extremely loud, which will draw the attention of anybody up to a quarter mile away, and extremely accessible as they are right in your purse or pocket.
They are the least cost prohibitive of any form of non-lethal self-defense and a simple keychain alarm can be purchased for about the same cost as eating at a fast food restaurant. So there can be no viable argument as to why any college or university would not be able to provide their students with such an alarm due to financial limitations.
I do not know if some colleges have already implemented a similar protocol to the one I am suggesting here but hopefully all of them will in the very near future. Student safety should be the highest priority at any institution of higher learning.

How To Train Your Dog Using The Electronic Dog Repeller
The electronic dog repeller is a wonderfully effective tool for deterring a dog with questionable intentions. Few people, however, understand that it can be a wonderfully effective training tool as well. Most people hear the name “repeller” and assume that the device’s sole purpose is to repel a dog that may intend on doing you harm. While the electronic dog repeller is great at doing that it is also a very humane instrument and causes the dog absolutely no harm and even comes equipped with a training setting that can be used to train your dog.
Having a dog myself, Kody our yellow lab, I understand the importance of properly training a dog. Kody is almost like one of my own children though and as such any training we did with him and any training I recommend anyone else do with their dog is going to be, above all else, humane. Although effective in deterring dogs the electronic dog repeller is still very humane and to such a degree that I would recommend it to anyone looking for a dog training device.
Here are some tips on training your dog with the electronic dog repeller…
1. Make sure the device is working properly by seeing how your dog initially reacts to the dog repeller. Remember that the device uses such a high frequency that it is not even detectable by the human ear, only the dogs. Most dogs will just try to leave the room immediately to get away from the noise; this will tell you that the device is in fact working.
2. Let me tell you right here and now that no command is more important for a puppy to master as soon as possible than the ‘sit’ command. Try and reinforce that one early and often in the training. If the dog does not sit when given the ‘sit’ command then press the button on the repeller and a very loud, high frequency sound will emit from the device and reinforce your command by letting the dog know it needs to listen next time or receive the uncomfortable noise.
3. The next most important command is coming when called. Follow the same rules as outlined in step 2 if the dog does not come when called. Again, this is a command to practice early and often.
4. Offer your dog a small reward (i.e. a piece of milk bone) when it does follow your command. Positive reinforcement is as important as negative reinforcement in the early stages of training.
5. Have patience. I don’t think I need to further explain the importance of having patience when training your dog.
With a little patience, love and reinforcement you will have yourself a best friend that is outgoing, friendly and obedient.

Why Personal Alarms Are Custom Made For Senior Citizen Self-Defense
Seniors have a multitude of choices when it comes to self-defense tools. However, all of these choices come with varying degrees of effectiveness and safety and so careful consideration and diligent research are always very important before making a decision as to which self-defense tool to carry. In my opinion there is no tool of self-defense more custom made and perfectly suitable for seniors than a simple (yet extremely effective) personal alarm.
Personal alarms are simply a small handheld device, often in the form of a keychain that emits an extremely loud distress signal when a button on the alarm is pressed and when I say loud I mean 130 decibels of ear-splitting, attention directing loud too. That’s certainly loud enough to scare the heck out of some foolish purse snatcher who isn’t expecting much retaliation from a 75 year old lady. Aside from the scare it will put into any attacker, and perhaps more importantly, the alarm will draw the attention of anyone in the area. Attention is exactly the last thing that attacker wants when he or she is attempting to relieve a senior citizen of their wallet, purse, jewelry and potentially their life. Attention gets the cops called and bystanders involved and this will more times than not get the attacker running for the hills as soon as that alarm is pressed.
Personal alarms are also great because they make a wonderful alternative to much more dangerous forms of self-defense for seniors like stun guns, tasers, pepper spray, mace and firearms. All of those weapons I just mentioned are immensely effective in deterring an assault but they are also extremely dangerous and potentially fatal if used improperly. Also, most of those items are illegal in some areas without the proper licensure whereas personal alarms are 100% legal anywhere in the world.
Lastly, personal alarms cost a fraction of most other self-defense items and can be purchased for about the same amount as it costs to eat at a fast food restaurant. In my opinion it makes personal alarms for seniors a great investment and wonderful piece of insurance and peace of mind. So if you are a senior citizen looking for a little added insurance against the bad guys of the world or know a senior citizen that you’d like to help protect against these bad guys please seriously consider arming them with a personal alarm immediately.

If Zimmerman Would Have Known Where To Buy Pepper Spray This Whole Ordeal Wouldn’t Exist
The whole situation surrounding George Zimmerman, the late Trayvon Martin, their families and the media in general is truly a sad an unfortunate one, as is any situation where a human being has lost their life. Whether you believe racism played a major role and that Trayvon was more or less murdered in cold blood or that Zimmerman was truly acting in self-defense the fact of the matter is that a young man has lost his life and parents have lost their child. Not to mention the fact that Zimmerman and his family, whether Zimmerman acted unjustly or not, has lost any semblance of a normal life that they could ever hope to experience after this tragedy.
I do not yet have an opinion regarding Zimmerman’s innocence until all the facts of the case are presented (as best they can be presented as half of the people involved in the incident can no longer speak for themselves). I will say however that I don’t agree with civilians walking around with concealed firearms as was the case with George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was licensed to carry the weapon he used to kill Trayvon Martin and so from a legal perspective he was not in violation of any law for simply carrying the weapon on his person but I just think it’s a recipe for disaster to have people walking around with loaded weapons and this latest incident should prove that.
Let us say though that Zimmerman’s account of the situation happened as he explained it to police and that Martin had attacked him and that Zimmerman was merely defending himself against this attack. That means that the crime of punching someone is now punishable by death in this case and that is grossly outrageous to me. Zimmerman, and any other civilian wishing to defend themselves, can do so without having to end another’s life and that is with pepper spray.
Pepper spray is an extremely effective alternative to firearms and can stop an attacker dead in his or her tracks without having to take that attacker’s life. Had Mr. Zimmerman chosen to carry pepper spray and not a firearm we would never have heard of either one of these guys. Trayvon would be around to tell his side of the story and both of their lives and the lives of both of their families would not be so dramatically, negatively and forever changed. Instead of a national news story that is once again dividing us all we’d have a little news snippet on page 2 of the local paper there in Florida.
So please, if you are one of the many Americans walking the streets with a concealed firearm, legally or otherwise, please consider a humane alternative to ending the life of another human and carry pepper spray instead.

Michigan Lawmakers Are Finally Making Some Sense And Letting Their Citizens Buy A Taser
As of right now it is still illegal to buy, sell, own or carry a Taser in the state of Michigan but that looks to be changing if a new bill is passed. This new bill would allow citizens of Michigan to legally purchase and carry a Taser, provided they have a Concealed Pistol License (CPL). This would be a wonderful adjustment to the state’s laws and one that would allow citizens to defend themselves in a humane, non-lethal way not afforded them by handguns.
What I find so crazy is that it took until the year 2012 to get around to introducing this bill. When you consider the fact that it is legal in Michigan (with the proper license) to carry a concealed firearm, that works by blasting a hole in an attacker, yet it is still illegal in this same state to stop that same attacker in a much more humane fashion that won’t kill or even seriously injure the attacker. If you could explain to me how that makes any sense please leave a comment in the comments section below because to me this seems utterly ludicrous.
Most states have no such laws banning the use of Tasers and others have restrictions such as the need to have a firearms license in order to carry a Taser. Yet there are still a few states that prohibit the use of any stun device, like New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Again, in these it is possible to relatively easily secure a license to carry a firearm but not a stun device. Just to clarify a firearm discharges a bullet that is intended to leave a gaping hole in someone that could very easily kill or at the very least injure the person whereas a stun device subdues the same person without leaving the person dead or so much as injured in almost all cases.
Tasers, like any stun device, does not work on the principle of pain but by disrupting an attacker’s normal neurological pathways by delivering a high voltage, low amperage shock. They are so effective because an attacker cannot ‘attack through the pain’ as may be the case with a defensive spray like mace. Yet as effective as these Taser devices are they do not leave any lasting effects after the first few minutes. They simply allow the user a way to effectively defend themselves without having to kill another human being.
So kudos to the state legislators in Michigan and here is to hoping that they realize how absurd the current laws are regarding Tasers and that this bill allowing its citizens to defend themselves with a Taser becomes law.

The Best Self Defense For Seniors Is The Keychain Alarm
Every day that the sun rises over the eastern horizon it shines upon more senior citizens than it did the day previous. Every night that it settles in the west and night falls upon America that means that there are that many more targets for purse snatching, low-life, morally bankrupt thieves to attack for personal gain. It can be a dangerous world out there and there may be nobody that is truer for then senior citizens living alone. The simple fact of the matter is that as we age we tend to lose a little bit of our natural ability to defend ourselves against attack and those thieves we just talked about know that all too well. There is a very simple, effective, safe, legal and inexpensive way for seniors to defend themselves though and that is with a simple keychain alarm.
Obviously senior citizens have a multitude of choices when it comes to self-defense products. There are stun devices, tasers, pepper spray, mace, batons, firearms, knives, martial arts training and the list goes on and on. Every single one of those alternatives I just mentioned cost more than a keychain alarm, are far more dangerous than a keychain alarm and most require at least some basic training in order to use the device to its maximum capacity. Personal alarms take absolutely no special training whatsoever, cost about the same as a meal at McDonalds and are still extremely effective in deterring criminals.
Personal alarms, usually in the form of a keychain work by emitting an insanely loud siren for such a small device. I am talking about 130 decibels loud and that is roughly the decibel equivalent of sitting in the 10th row of a rock concert. So when some bad guy goes to take your purse, and a wailing alarm that can be heard for a quarter mile goes off, I can assure you that the purse snatcher will understand he has just drawn the attention of every single person in the vicinity that isn’t completely deaf. Attention is the last thing a purse snatcher wants and more often than not this should get him running the other way in fear of being caught. The fact that the alarm comes in the form of a keychain makes it almost impossible to forget at home and also very convenient for everyday use as most also come equipped with a flashlight.
So please don’t hesitate to equip yourself with a simple keychain alarm if you are a senior citizen living alone or to buy one for a senior you know is living alone.

If You Are A Senior Living Alone You Should Consider Pepper Spray As A Means Of Self Defense
There are more senior citizens in the world today than at any other point in history. Heck, there are just a lot more people in the world today period. This means that there is now an abundance of elderly people living alone and unfortunately elderly people are often targeted by scumbag criminals that consider senior citizens ‘easy prey’. As I stated before there are a lot more people in the world period and that means a lot more of these scumbag criminals. Just because a criminal is a conscienceless jerk does not mean that they are stupid and as such they are smart enough to know who makes an easier target for a purse snatching between a 25-year old and a 76-year old grandmother. Time eventually slows all of us down just a tad and takes the edge off of our senses and naturally we lose a bit of the ability to defend ourselves in a physical confrontation. Because of this fact senior citizens, especially those living alone, need to carry with them some means of self-defense. Pepper spray is an extremely effective tool of self-defense that is suitable for almost any senior citizen living unassisted.
There are other options available for senior citizens when it comes to non-lethal self-defense weapons but none, in my opinion, are as effective, relatively safe and easy to use as pepper spray. A person needs no special training to use pepper spray and it’s legal to carry in almost every part of the country. Stun devices and Tasers are also extremely effective in stopping an attacker, as effective as a 9mm handgun according to some police tests, but do require at least some basic training and I feel these devices are much more dangerous and hence I do not recommend them for most seniors. Tasers and stun devices are also illegal in many more areas than are defensive sprays. Pepper spray also can be used by
Pepper spray usually has an effective range of about 6-8 feet depending on the brand, spray canister, and wind conditions. It works by causing intense pain to the attacker’s mucus membranes such as eyes, nose and throat. Not only that but because capsicum, the pepper spray’s active ingredient, is a highly potent inflammatory it also causes swelling in the eyes which temporarily blinds an attacker and makes it almost impossible to continue an attack.
So if you are a senior, or anyone for that matter, living alone please arm yourself with something non-lethal, extremely effective and legal like pepper spray.

Do Not Send Your Child Off To College Without A Keychain Alarm
The day your child heads off to college, especially when they will be travelling a fair distance and living on campus, can be an extremely emotional time for parents. It’s the first time that many kids really strike out on their own for the first time and empty nest syndrome can hit hard for mothers, fathers and siblings alike. You worry about their grades, their finances, who they will befriend and of course you worry about their general well-being. With all of this stress and worry during a time that should be celebrated and joyous it would be nice to have a simple and effective way of alleviating some of this stress. Well, there is one and it’s called a keychain alarm.
A keychain alarm is a device that shouldn’t cost more than 20 dollars and can offer protection for your college student that may prove to be absolutely invaluable. Unlike a stun gun, taser, pepper spray or mace a keychain alarm does now work by physically harming an attacker or incapacitating an individual in any physical sense. This makes these alarms entirely safe to carry for any man, woman, child and most importantly your college student. Keychain alarms work by simply emitting an extremely loud alarm that works to both frighten away an attacker and alert everyone within shouting distance that a crime is occurring.
If your curious as to how a sound alone is going to scare an attacker I should make it very clear that we are talking about an alarm so loud it is equivalent to sitting in the 10th row of your average rock concert (most of these keychain alarms register at least 130 decibels!). Even some scumbag looking to attack a student walking alone on a campus at night is smart enough to understand that the loud alarm means people’s attention will be drawn and the chances of him being caught shoot through the roof. Chances are very good that he will turn tail and run immediately for fear of being apprehended.
Another thing about the keychain alarm is that it makes it possible for someone to still call out for help even if an attacker moves quickly and covers a victim’s mouth. While a scumbag attacker is concerned with covering a victim’s mouth so that he or she cannot scream for help, the victim can simply set off the alarm and the attacker’s plans are immediately spoiled.
So please, if you have a child heading off to college in the fall or already have one enrolled please do yourself, your family and your child a huge favor and make sure they have a keychain alarm with them at all times.
Stay Safe,
Carl Vouer

A Stun Baton Flashlight Is The Ultimate Non-Lethal Self Defense Tool
Having been in the non-lethal self-defense business for many years I have seen a great deal of self-defense weapons come and go. Some were great and others not so great but the one that has always stood out as the very best and most effective in my opinion is the stun gun flashlight.
Stay Safe,
First and foremost the stun gun flashlight is a flashlight, and who couldn’t use a flashlight from time to time? The fact that the stun gun flashlight is a device you can use on a daily basis is what really sets it apart from its peers and what makes the device so extraordinary. Stun devices, especially stun batons are wonderful non-lethal self-defense tools but how often will they really be used? Hopefully never.
Stun devices, in my opinion, have an advantage over other non-lethal self-defense weapons like mace and pepper spray in that they don’t allow your opponent to “fight through the pain”. Defensive sprays are extremely effective but there is the small chance, especially if an attacker is under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, that the spray will not immediately and effectively stop the attack from proceeding. A stun device on the other hand leaves this attacker with no choice but to stop attacking. That is because a stun device like the stun gun flashlight does not work on the premise of causing an attacker pain but by completely disrupting the attacker’s neurological pathways. In other words it takes away the attackers ability to control their own body so it doesn’t matter how tough the attacker is or how high their pain threshold.
Stun batons like this one have an advantage over other more traditional stun devices in that they give the user more reach. With traditional handheld stun devices one must actually be touching an attacker in order for the device to work and subsequently subdue the attacker whereas with a stun baton one does not need to be nearly as close to an attacker in order for the baton to do the same job. The best analogy for this is to think about a boxer. One trait they always list before a fight is a boxer’s reach and with good reason as reach is a major advantage in a fight. If you don’t have to be as close to your opponent as your opponent does to you in order to deliver an effective strike then you have a major advantage over that opponent now don’t you?
So if you feel the need to carry a non-lethal self-defense tool I would hope that a device like the stun gun flashlight would be strongly considered.
Stay Safe,
Carl Vouer

Dear Valentine, I got you this stun gun flashlight because I care
Dear Valentine,
While other men are out buying cards, candy, and flowers for their wives and/or girlfriends (hopefully not both) like a bunch of unoriginal, mindless drones I have decided to go an altogether different route. This Valentine’s Day I have decided to show you that I truly care by getting you something you can really use, is totally original and unique, and unequivocally says I love you.
Sweetheart, I couldn’t help but notice that you are not a bat and as such cannot maneuver around in the dark so well. Fortunately for you this stun gun flashlight is exactly what the first half of its name implies, a flashlight. Not just any flashlight either but a sturdy, ultra-bright one.
Darling, do you remember when you called me in the middle of the night whilst you were stranded on the side of the highway having to change a tire all by your lonesome? I’m sure you do as I remember hearing the panic in your voice as you explained to me the danger you were in with the cars whizzing by, enveloped in pitch darkness. I worried so much for you that it was almost unbearable. Now we can both put our minds at ease because this stun gun flashlight comes with a detachable red cone that can be used to increase your visibility during roadside emergencies.
My Love, although this device, amongst other things, is a stun device that can be used to disable an attacker at close range it absolutely makes me quiver to think of you so close to a potentially dangerous individual. That is why this stun gun flashlight also comes equipped with an ultra-loud, 130 decibel alarm. If a bad guy should approach and you know his intentions are to harm you, simply press the alarm button and anyone in a quarter mile radius is going to know something is amiss. More importantly the bad man will know that everyone in the area knows something is amiss and will most likely turn tail and flee for fear of being seen and ultimately apprehended.
Schmoopie Bear, now if that man should continue to approach, even after you’ve sounded the alarm I want you to remember one very important thing and that is that this device, above all other things, is a 200,000 volt stun baton. If he doesn’t want to treat his fellow humans with the respect they are due then you need to help teach him a lesson with these 200,000 volts. And remember, voltage does not kill which is what makes these stun devices so humane, they simply incapacitate and almost never leave the attacker with any long term negative side effects. So that’s it, I hope you enjoy your gift.
Love,
Your Valentine

Dear Seniors, Please Don’t Buy Personal Alarms. Signed, The Criminals Of The World
Dear Seniors,
We are writing to you in hopes of reaching some kind of agreement in regards to the personal self-defense craze that has been sweeping the nation, I’m speaking of course about personal alarms. These trusty little alarms have greatly impeded our ability to attack you and rob you of your cash and valuables and we have mouths to feed, namely our own as we care little for others well-being. With their ultra-high decibel alarms they attack a great deal of unwanted attention to the scene and seeing as we are trying to commit a crime we would much rather not have that unwanted attention. Unwanted attention usually brings the police or at the very least other people looking to help and that just doesn’t sit well with us as we are sure you can understand.
You see, we criminals like to take the path of least resistance when finding someone to mug and we just assume that Father time has slowed you all down enough to make it much easier to take your belongings than say a 30 year-olds’.
These little personal alarms, that usually come in the form of a keychain (making them nearly impossible to forget at home), can register decibel levels that are roughly as loud as a rock concert (125-135 dB’s). That’s great for you as it makes the device extremely effective but that noise really gives us criminals a scare and that just doesn’t seem right to us. More often than not, when we hear a noise that loud while we are about to attack you we will probably just turn our cowardly little tails and run in the opposite direction for fear of being seen and ultimately apprehended. If that happens how are we going to take your watch and pawn it?
Also, these trusty little devices are completely safe to carry as they do not operate by incapacitating us like a stun device, Taser or handgun might, so I guess for that we can be somewhat grateful but the end result is still us either getting arrested or at least leaving the scene empty-handed and that makes it very difficult for us to buy the drugs we are probably addicted to.
I hate to even throw this out there but these personal alarms almost always come with a little flashlight as well and that makes them a very handy tool when trying to unlock a door at night. So even if we never get around to trying to take your wallet or purse there is still great use for these alarms even if you never have to be in the unfortunate situation of using the alarm against us.
So in closing I would just like to say please do not purchase one of these alarms as it makes it extremely difficult to mug you.
Thanks,
Criminals Of The World

Looking For A Unique Valentines Gift? Try The Cell Phone Stun Gun
Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and that means millions of Americans will once again dash out to the local Hallmark store or order flowers online or perhaps buy a box of chocolates with a little teddy bear with a little heart on its chest. Their way of saying ‘I love you’ to their significant other or at the very least “I like you enough to buy what every other jerk is buying their significant other today’. So if you like your significant other just enough to get them something that lacks any imagination whatsoever please feel free to get them a box of chocolates, or roses or just some mass produced Hallmark card that is exactly like the one that thousands of others are getting their boyfriend or girlfriend, that way they will know you care just enough.
However, if you really want to get your significant something completely and utterly unique and thoughtful, a gift that says ‘I care about you and your well-being and I would hate for anything to happen to you’ you may want to consider getting that significant other of yours a cell phone stun gun. I know what you are probably saying to yourself and that is ‘how in the heck am I supposed to give a stun gun to my girlfriend or boyfriend on the most romantic of all holidays?’. Well let’s think about it shall we? What is really romantic about a card or box of candy? What is getting a box of candy saying to your significant other, I hope you get fat so here’s some candy? What can possibly be more romantic than protecting your significant other from potential attack? Nothing in my opinion. When you give the gift of a cell phone stun gun you give an entirely unique gift which automatically shows you’re not just some mindless drone that gets their valentine the same dang thing that every other mindless drone has been classically conditioned to give like one of Pavlov’s dogs.
Your valentine might at first assume you have given him or her a cell phone as even on the closest of inspection this device appears to be just that, a cell phone. Once he or she realizes that it is in fact a 4.5 million volt weapon of thoughtful, humane, non-lethal, and extremely effective self-defense they will no doubt know that they have the greatest, most thoughtful valentine around, they will also most likely wish they had gotten you something besides a crummy card. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Is Pepper Spray Right For You?
Being in the non-lethal self-defense business my responsibility has always been to help protect innocent people defend themselves against potential attackers through non-lethal means. When discussing non-lethal self-defense the talk often turns to the 2 most popular and most effective self-defense weapons, stun devices and defensive sprays. Stun devices are extremely effective but I’d like to, at least in this article, discuss defensive sprays (often referred to as pepper spray or mace) and more importantly whether or not pepper spray is right for you personally.
When answering this question it is obvious that one needs to fully understand just what pepper spray really is, and perhaps just as importantly what it is not. Pepper spray is really just what the name implies, a defensive spray that utilizes an active ingredient called OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) and is exactly the same ingredient that makes your mouth burn, eyes water and nose run when eating something with hot peppers in it. Of course the ‘hotness’ of most defensive sprays (certainly any that will prove effective) are much ‘hotter’ than any pepper known to man and that is exactly why they are so effective. A pepper’s hotness is rated on something called the Scoville Scale which is simply a unit of measurement to measure the ‘hotness’ of a pepper. So for comparison a raw habanero rates about 250,000 Scoville units and if you’ve ever had a habanero you’ll no doubt understand how blazing hot a pepper that measures a quarter million units is. There is a pepper called the Naga Viper pepper that the Guinness Book of World Records recognized as ‘the hottest pepper in the world’ and that pepper measures about 1.3 million Scoville units. Most of the defensive sprays sold in the U.S. measure about 3-5 million Scoville units, or about 1,000 times hotter than a Jalapeno pepper. Now imagine this kind of heat in liquid form and sprayed into the eyes, nose and mouth of an attacker and you can understand why pepper spray is so popular and so effective.
The question remains though, is pepper spray right for you? First and foremost I think that anyone carrying a defensive spray needs to be a mature, law-abiding citizen with zero criminal history. Also keep in mind that with pepper spray’s effectiveness comes an inherent level of danger for both the assailant and the user and as such careful consideration should be used before purchasing a defensive spray. One of the biggest concerns is that pepper spray could be taken away by an assailant and used against the original user and if the user is nervous, which would be completely understandable in the case of an attack, it could further hamper the user’s ability to remove the safety, point and spray before the attacker grabs a hold of them and ultimately the defensive spray. More often than not though I think the likelihood of a defensive spray being taken from a user is much higher with people who have been slowed by advanced age. I always use this simple test when deciding if a senior citizen should carry a defensive spray, if you can drive an automobile then you should by all means be able to handle a small canister of pepper spray in self-defense.
So in short if you are an able-bodied, responsible member of society that is looking to ensure your own safety then i feel that pepper spray is not only right for you but highly recommended.

Personal Alarms Make The Perfect Self Defense For Seniors
The number of senior citizens and the Earth’s population in general, is growing with each new day and as an unfortunate result so is the number of “easy targets” for scumbag criminals the world over. You see the criminal mind, although void of good intentions, is often smart enough to understand that the path of least resistance is the way to go when looking to profit from criminal activities. So when you’re common, petty, purse-snatching, criminal is on the prowl and looking for an easy target he is much more apt to choose a senior citizen than say a 30 year old and the reasons for this should be obvious. The criminal will assume, unfairly or not, that the senior citizen will be much less apt at defending themselves than will the 30 year old, this is exactly why every single senior citizen should carry some instrument of self-defense.
Today senior citizens have a multitude of options when it comes to picking an instrument of self-defense. Obviously, any choice should be legal but just as importantly any choice we make should also be safe. Furthermore, I think any self-defense choice we make should be a non-lethal one as everyone deserves to be treated humanely, even scumbag criminals. Non-lethal in no way implies ‘ineffective’ as many weapons of non-lethal self defense can be every bit as effective as a handgun. Amongst these non-lethal self-defense products you have stun devices, defensive sprays and my personal favorite for senior citizens, personal alarms. Stun devices and defensive sprays can be extremely effective but there is an inherent danger in that effectiveness that I think makes them dangerous, if not counterproductive, for some. I would strongly suggest either a stun device or pepper spray for an able bodied, relatively strong senior but for those seniors who are not as strong and fast these weapons could be potentially taken by the assailant and used against the senior. For this reason I think a personal alarm is really the best call as a personal alarm does not work by causing pain or incapacitation to work, as would be the case with either a stun device or defensive spray.
Personal alarms work by emitting an extremely loud distress signal that can be audible up to half a mile away. What this does is draw the attention of anyone in the area and more importantly scares the heck out of the assailant as he or she knows full well that everyone in the area has heard this distress signal and attention has been drawn. Many of these alarms come in the form of keychains which make them not only convenient but also very difficult to forget when leaving the house. So please consider such a device if you are a senior citizen or know one that you would like to protect.

The Best Self Defense Measure For Senior Citizens Is A Personal Alarm
Being in the business of non-lethal self-defense I have made it my mission in life to protect as many innocent people as I possibly can through the education and implementation of non-lethal self-defense items such as stun devices, defensive sprays, personal alarms and the like. I firmly believe that every law abiding adult should have the right, if not the responsibility to themselves and their family, to carry some form of non-lethal self defense at all times. Oftentimes you will see devices like pepper spray, stun guns and personal alarms geared toward women and seniors and for good reason. The idea is that individuals who may be at a physical disadvantage in the event of an attack should be armed with a device that can help them walk away from such an attack unscathed. Anyone male or female of just about any age could benefit from such devices but I personally focus most of my efforts on educating senior citizens in regards to non-lethal self-defense. Again, anyone could potentially benefit from carrying some form of self-defense but I think senior citizens more than anyone can see this benefit as they are often targeted by scumbag criminals that assume seniors will be an easier target and less capable of physically defending themselves.
There are a multitude of devices that senior citizens can use to help protect themselves in the unfortunate event of an attack but none are safer and easier to use than personal alarms. That is not to say that I don’t think stun devices and/or defensive sprays would not be suitable for many seniors it is just that with stun devices and defensive sprays one runs the risk of potentially injuring themselves in the process of trying to defend themselves. Also stun devices and defensive sprays could potentially be wrestled from a senior and used against them by the attacker, especially if the attacker is considerably stronger and faster than the senior in question.
Personal alarms are wonderful because not only are they absolutely and completely safe but can also be extremely effective, just as effective as a stun device or defensive spray in many cases. Personal alarms work by emitting an extremely loud distress signal and when I use the words ‘extremely loud’ I am talking about 130 decibels or roughly the volume equivalent of standing in the 10th row of the average rock show here. That is more than enough volume to scare the holy heck out of any attacker and send him running in the opposite direction for fear of being seen and apprehended. So if you are a senior citizen, or anyone for that matter, who would enjoy the extra security that carrying a personal alarm can bring, please consider carrying one yourself.
Stay Safe,
Carl Vouer

This Christmas Let’s Give Seniors The Gift Of Self Defense With A Personal Alarm
Christmas is perhaps my favorite time of year and what’s not to enjoy about Christmas? We get to spend quality time with friends and family, enjoy home cooked meals and exchange heartfelt gifts with one another. The only problem I see with gift giving is that often times we exchange gifts that end up going right back to the store to be returned either because it was the wrong size or the person receiving the gift just wasn’t into whatever the gift was. I mean that is the whole reason we are so often asked if we would like a gift receipt by the person working the register. That is why this Christmas I’d like to suggest that we give a gift to any senior citizens on our list that they will not only want and appreciate but can actually use and that gift is a personal alarm. What better way to show your appreciation for someone special in your life than to give them a gift that could very well save their life one day?
Personal alarms are one of those items that I think just about anyone should own but I really think make ideal tools of self defense for seniors as they require no special training, can be extremely effective in deterring an assault and are completely and utterly safe. Seniors are also at a higher risk of assault than their younger counterparts and that is not only because they may be physically less apt at defending themselves but because criminals know they may be less apt at physically defending themselves. They work by simply emitting an extremely high decibel alarm that works to scare off potential attackers. Many of these alarms come in the form of a keychain which makes them virtually impossible to forget at home and also makes it readily and quickly available in the event of an attack.
Also, it is not just giving the gift of a personal alarm but so much more that you will be giving this holiday season. It is the gift of security, or at the very least the feeling of security that you can be giving to a loved one. Fortunately we live in a rather civilized world (I understand that that comment is open for debate) and the chances that such an alarm would ever have to be used is rather slim but just knowing it is there can offer a very fulfilling feeling for some.
So please consider giving the gift of self defense to any senior citizens on your list this holiday season.

Carl Vouer

Self Defense For Seniors Is As Easy As Buying A Personal Alarm
My passion has always been, and will always remain to be, helping people defend and protect themselves and their families via non-lethal self-defense products. Of all the people that need protection, which is each and every one of us if you really think about it, senior citizens are the people I most often consider. Seniors are often targeted because criminals assume that the average senior citizen will be less apt at defending themselves than the average 25 year old for example. Whether or not this is a fair assumption is not so much the point as is the fact that seniors need to carry some form of self defense as they are in fact a more highly targeted group of people when it comes to petty crime.
One of the best way for a senior citizen to defend themselves against potential attack is to carry a personal alarm at all times. Personal alarms are ideal for senior citizens because unlike stun guns, tasers and defensive sprays, they are entirely safe. Personal alarms are an instrument of self defense that uses no projectiles, electrical charge or harmful spray yet can be every bit as effective as any weapon of self-defense. They simply use a very loud noise (130 decibels or more in most cases) to scare away potential attackers and alert anyone in the area that help may be needed. Most criminals are not looking to be caught and that is why such a loud noise will serve to scare an attacker as he or she will know that the attention of anyone in the area is being directed towards them. Another reason I feel these little alarms are so perfect for seniors is because they take no special training whatsoever as would be the case with a firearm, taser or just about anything that uses a projectile. I would suggest however that anyone carrying a personal alarm practice removing it from wherever you are carrying it (purse, pocket, etc…) and activating the alarm as quickly as possible so that in the event of a real attack the motion becomes automatic. Personal alarms are very small which makes them extremely easy to carry along in a purse or pocket. Many even come in the form of a keychain, making them virtually impossible to forget when a senior citizen leaves the house.
So if you are a senior citizen yourself or are looking for that perfect, inexpensive gift idea for any senior citizens you may know, please keep personal alarms in mind as they really are the perfect item of self-defense for seniors.

If You Are A Senior And Want To Defend Yourself Try A Personal Keychain Alarm
I continue to be astonished that there are senior citizens walking around without any measure of self defense whatsoever aside from just assuming that they will never be attacked. Hopefully that is true and statistically speaking the chances are in the average senior citizen’s favor that they won’t be involved in a physical altercation but that doesn’t mean one should not take extremely easy and affordable measures to ensure their safety should such an attack take place. By far the easiest, safest, most humane and cost-effective measure that any senior can take to ensure his or her own safety is by purchasing a personal alarm of some kind. Most of these personal alarms come in the form of a very small keychain alarm.
So how do these keychain alarms work and are they in fact effective in thwarting an attack at all? They work by emitting an extremely loud audible alarm that can be heard up to, and in some cases more than, a quarter mile away. That should answer the second part of that question with a resounding yes; they are effective in thwarting a potential attack. The premise with which these devices work upon is a very simple one and that is the notion that criminals and other would-be attackers do not want to be caught breaking the law. As such there is no criminal or would-be attacker that is going to want any attention drawn their way after they begin attacking someone and there isn’t anything that is going to draw the attention of others more than a really loud noise. So once a senior citizen finds themselves in a precarious situation involving another individual that is ready to attack them they would simply push a button and an ear splitting alarm emits. That ear splitting alarm is going to draw loads of attention at any time of night or day and that attention is what is going to scare the assailant away. Even if the alarm doesn’t scare the attacker away it will at the very least draw the attention of people that can help. All of this gives the senior a far greater chance of surviving such an attack unscathed then would be the case if the senior had no personal alarm.
Okay, if you are a senior and are still not convinced that carrying one of these keychain alarms is the best thing to do then let me add that most of these keychain alarms come with a built in flashlight. How could having a flashlight on your keychain not be helpful and if that’s what you need to hear to help you understand that one of these devices is absolutely imperative than I hope I’ve done my job.

Practical Self Defense for Seniors Should Be Less About Karate and More About Personal Alarms
I don’t know if it is due to the rising popularity of mixed martial arts, the growing senior citizen population or a culmination of several things but for whatever reason I see more and more self-defense classes advertised and many of these classes are geared towards seniors. I think it is great if people want to take self-defense classes as such classes include several benefits for the participant. Confidence, better health, and a better ability to defend one’s self in the event of an attack being the most obvious benefits. But are these classes, especially those geared towards seniors, going to be enough to really save a senior citizen in the event of a real life attack? Are such classes really practical for seniors?
Again, I want to make it clear that I think a self-defense class is a great idea for people of any age but when it comes to people of an advanced age we should look a little deeper than a self defense class when considering means of self-defense. How much can be taught to an 80 year old woman in a self defense class that is really going to translate to that woman really being able to defend herself against a 6’2″ 230 pound attacker? Nothing. Even if that woman began training in her teens and was a multiple degree black belt by the time she was 80 she is going to have a rough go of things against a much younger, faster, bigger and stronger attacker. That is why although these seniors could certainly benefit from such classes they should by no means let what is taught in these classes be their only line of defense against potential attack. So what can these senior citizens do to help improve their chances of surviving such an attack in a more practical and potentially more effective way? The answer to that question is simple, personal alarms.
Personal alarms are great for senior citizens for a few reasons. One, they are very small, light, and easy-to-carry making them ideal for people of an advanced age. Two, they are easy to use and require zero special training. And last but not least they are entirely safe for all parties involved unlike other more traditional forms of self defense like stun guns, pepper spray or firearms.
Just how effective can an instrument be that doesn’t physically subdue an attacker? Extremely effective is the answer to that question and let me explain why this is. A personal alarm works by simply letting out a distress call that can be heard for up to a mile away in some cases. The majority of personal alarms that I’ve come in contact with register around 115-135 decibels and let me tell you just how loud 130 decibels is, for comparison a rock concert from the 10th row registers about 125 decibels. So if some dirt-bag attacker is in the mood to mug an old lady for her purse and from that purse the old lady pulls out a personal alarm and lets out a 130 decibel siren? I can tell you right now that there is a very good chance that attacker knows the jig is up and it’s time for him to start running in some other direction before the long arm of the law shows up. Extremely loud noises attract the attention of others and that is precisely what any criminal does not want.
So please feel free to take self-defense classes as I think they can only improve your chances of surviving an attack but don’t let the martial arts you learn be your only line of defense and certainly don’t let that be the case if you are a senior citizen.
