There are two ways you can play Valentine’s Day this year. You can get your significant other what every other man is getting his sweetheart or you can be thoughtful and original. If you want to get what every other man is getting his sweetheart you’ll want to go the candy, flowers or jewelry route. This is all fine and well and you will find plenty of women who enjoy candy, flowers and jewelry (my wife included) but why be like everyone else and get another forgettable gift on another forgettable holiday? If you ask me getting your significant other candy, flowers or jewelry simply says ‘I only care enough to get what society tells me I should be getting you on this day and not enough to have an original thought and get you something unique’. Go ahead and write that in the card you give your girlfriend along with her red roses and see what her reaction is.
Now, the other alternative is to get your sweetie something completely original and something she can really use and that is pepper spray. I know that doesn’t sound very romantic but if you think about it what is the message you are sending when giving your Valentine a canister of pepper spray? Ito me personally it says that you care very much for her and want her to be protected at all times. Feeling protected and wanting to be protected is something that is very basic for all human beings and your significant other is certainly no exception. A box of chocolate or half dozen long stemmed roses is fine and dandy but it isn’t going to do her any good when she’s walking alone without you and is attacked by a mugger. Pepper spray on the other hand will put that mugger in his place and make sure your sweetheart gets home safe. And defensive sprays like pepper spray and mace are non-lethal and leave no lasting side effects so giving her pepper spray for Valentine’s day will show her that you are not only interested in protecting her but that you also care deeply for your fellow man. Protective and caring are two wonderful character traits that any woman adores. So do yourself and your loved one a favor this Valentine’s Day and get her something she can really use, pepper spray. Is Pepper Spray Right For You?

Being in the non-lethal self-defense business my responsibility has always been to help protect innocent people defend themselves against potential attackers through non-lethal means. When discussing non-lethal self-defense the talk often turns to the 2 most popular and most effective self-defense weapons, stun devices and defensive sprays. Stun devices are extremely effective but I’d like to, at least in this article, discuss defensive sprays (often referred to as pepper spray or mace) and more importantly whether or not pepper spray is right for you personally.

When answering this question it is obvious that one needs to fully understand just what pepper spray really is, and perhaps just as importantly what it is not. Pepper spray is really just what the name implies, a defensive spray that utilizes an active ingredient called OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) and is exactly the same ingredient that makes your mouth burn, eyes water and nose run when eating something with hot peppers in it. Of course the ‘hotness’ of most defensive sprays (certainly any that will prove effective) are much ‘hotter’ than any pepper known to man and that is exactly why they are so effective. A pepper’s hotness is rated on something called the Scoville Scale which is simply a unit of measurement to measure the ‘hotness’ of a pepper. So for comparison a raw habanero rates about 250,000 Scoville units and if you’ve ever had a habanero you’ll no doubt understand how blazing hot a pepper that measures a quarter million units is. There is a pepper called the Naga Viper pepper that the Guinness Book of World Records recognized as ‘the hottest pepper in the world’ and that pepper measures about 1.3 million Scoville units. Most of the defensive sprays sold in the U.S. measure about 3-5 million Scoville units, or about 1,000 times hotter than a Jalapeno pepper. Now imagine this kind of heat in liquid form and sprayed into the eyes, nose and mouth of an attacker and you can understand why pepper spray is so popular and so effective.

The question remains though, is pepper spray right for you? First and foremost I think that anyone carrying a defensive spray needs to be a mature, law-abiding citizen with zero criminal history. Also keep in mind that with pepper spray’s effectiveness comes an inherent level of danger for both the assailant and the user and as such careful consideration should be used before purchasing a defensive spray. One of the biggest concerns is that pepper spray could be taken away by an assailant and used against the original user and if the user is nervous, which would be completely understandable in the case of an attack, it could further hamper the user’s ability to remove the safety, point and spray before the attacker grabs a hold of them and ultimately the defensive spray. More often than not though I think the likelihood of a defensive spray being taken from a user is much higher with people who have been slowed by advanced age. I always use this simple test when deciding if a senior citizen should carry a defensive spray, if you can drive an automobile then you should by all means be able to handle a small canister of pepper spray in self-defense.

So in short if you are an able-bodied, responsible member of society that is looking to ensure your own safety then i feel that pepper spray is not only right for you but highly recommended.

Know Where To Buy Pepper Spray And Don’t Become A Victim This Holiday Season

It’s that time of year again when the malls are packed with busy little shoppers. The holiday buzz is in the air and last second shoppers are scurrying about, looking for that perfect gift for the special people on their list. Unfortunately, amidst all this cheerful holiday shopping lies a dark truth about this time of year and that is that this time of year leads to an increased number of assaults and robberies, especially in and around malls and specifically mall parking lots. Your common criminal does not care that it is the season of giving; all he sees is an increased number of potential targets walking alone through a dimly lit mall parking lot with a purse full of cash. For one I would definitely shop alone as having a friend with you will always markedly decrease your chances of being targeted by potential criminals and if you must shop alone make sure you park in a well-lit area that has security surveillance of some kind. Last but certainly not least it would behoove you to carry some form of non-lethal self-defense so that if you are confronted by someone that isn’t feeling the holiday spirit you can defend yourself in a safe but effective manner.

You have a few choices when considering non-lethal self-defense tools this holiday season but the one I think that has really proven ideal for just about anyone is a defensive spray. Pepper spray, or mace as some call it even though Mace is a brand of pepper spray, is a highly effective pepper based spray that works by causing severe inflammation, swelling and intense pain to the attackers mucus membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, throat). The effects are temporary and almost never cause any lingering negative side effects which also makes pepper spray not only safe but humane as well. Defensive sprays are also extremely easy to use and require no special training whatsoever which is another reason they are so ideal for just about anyone.

So this holiday season, when you are out there getting your shopping done at the local mall please remember to keep yourself safe and consider carrying a defensive spray of some kind.

I Know Pepper Spray is Effective but is it Safe?

Is pepper spray safe? That’s a good question and one that gets asked quite a bit when people are considering non-lethal self-defense measures. Unfortunately it is a question that does not have a cut and dry answer. To answer this question let us first answer a more basic and rudimentary question and that is “what is pepper spray?”

Pepper spray is a non-lethal defensive spray made of an active ingredient called OC (Oleoresin Capsicum). Oleoresin Capsicum is a natural ingredient and is basically the same ingredient that makes hot peppers “hot”. The “hotness” of various peppers is measured using a system of measurement called Scoville units. Have you ever bitten into a Habanero pepper? Those are crazy hot and probably made your eyes water and nose run as the spiciness effects your mucus membranes. Could you imagine crushing that habanero up and rubbing it in your eyes and nose? Habaneros are a pretty hot pepper and measure about 200,000 Scoville units. For comparison’s sake, pure capsaicin ranks about 16,000,000! Most commercial pepper sprays that are available for civilian purchase rank about 2,5000,000. What this Oleoresin Capsicum does once it contacts the mucus membranes of an attacker is felt immediately. The capillaries of the eyes will burn and dilate and cause temporary blindness, inflammation of the attacker’s breathing tubes will cause difficulty in breathing and the overall tremendous burning sensation should last anywhere up to 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to flee the area and call the police.

So that is what pepper spray is and why it is effective but the question is whether or not pepper spray is safe. I think the short answer for this is yes, pepper spray is safe. The very few fatalities that have taken place as a result of being sprayed with a defensive spray have occurred because of an allergic reaction much the same way that peanuts have caused fatalities through allergic reaction. The effects are certainly painful as all get out but the pain and temporary blindness are necessary or pepper spray would not be effective. I consider stun guns to be safe as well but there must be some level of inherent danger with any non-lethal self-defense product or they would not be effective. Pepper spray is safe enough that I bought some for my own mother, wife and will do the same for my daughter when she is of the proper age to carry such a device.

So I guess the real answer to the question ‘is pepper spray safe?’ is to say that it is just as dangerous as it needs to be to stop an attack and not permanently injure or kill anyone. It is certainly not a product to be taken lightly but one that I think every law-abiding citizen should carry with them at all times.

Humane Self Defense Starts With Knowing Where To Buy Pepper Spray

When you hear the words ‘self defense’ there are a few images that may come to mind. Even though I have been in the business of non-lethal self-defense products for many years now I still hear those words and picture someone doing karate. The words are pretty self-explanatory though; self defense is simply the act of defending one’s self. I think everyone should have a plan for defending themselves and in my humble opinion I think any of these ways should include being as humane to your fellow man as possible and should by all means be non-lethal. I don’t want to be responsible for taking the life of another regardless of the circumstances. I believe everyone should have some means of defending themselves at all times but at the same time I truly believe in the motto ‘live and let live’. As such I always make sure I’m carrying some tool of non-lethal self-defense on my person at all times and more often than not this tool is pepper spray.

Pepper spray is immensely effective at stopping an attack. In fact some police studies have shown that pepper spray can be every bit as effective as some handguns and unlike a handgun it can stop an attack without sending another human being to the hospital or morgue. Why should we care so much about the well-being of someone who has just tried to attack us when that person obviously doesn’t have the same regard for our life or well-being? How about because we can be the better man (or woman) and show compassion for others even if they might not show the same compassion and humanity for us. Also people can change and some criminals can be rehabilitated and we should perhaps give people a second chance to redeem themselves, a little difficult to do if you’ve just been shot in the head. For example, let’s say some poor guy who is really down on his luck finds himself strung out on drugs and to get his next fix decides to snatch a purse. This gentleman is breaking the law and should certainly be punished but does he deserve to die or even be permanently wounded? I don’t feel he does.

Aside from the moral aspects of choosing pepper spray over other forms of self-defense it is just a weapon that is ideal for any god-fearing, law-abiding citizen in that it is not only effective but easy to carry and extremely easy to use without any formal training. So for all of these reasons I hope that the next time you are considering an item of self defense that you make it pepper spray.
