Personal Alarms Make The Perfect Self Defense For Seniors

The number of senior citizens and the Earth’s population in general, is growing with each new day and as an unfortunate result so is the number of “easy targets” for scumbag criminals the world over. You see the criminal mind, although void of good intentions, is often smart enough to understand that the path of least resistance is the way to go when looking to profit from criminal activities. So when you’re common, petty, purse-snatching, criminal is on the prowl and looking for an easy target he is much more apt to choose a senior citizen than say a 30 year old and the reasons for this should be obvious. The criminal will assume, unfairly or not, that the senior citizen will be much less apt at defending themselves than will the 30 year old, this is exactly why every single senior citizen should carry some instrument of self-defense.

Today senior citizens have a multitude of options when it comes to picking an instrument of self-defense. Obviously, any choice should be legal but just as importantly any choice we make should also be safe. Furthermore, I think any self-defense choice we make should be a non-lethal one as everyone deserves to be treated humanely, even scumbag criminals. Non-lethal in no way implies ‘ineffective’ as many weapons of non-lethal self defense can be every bit as effective as a handgun. Amongst these non-lethal self-defense products you have stun devices, defensive sprays and my personal favorite for senior citizens, personal alarms. Stun devices and defensive sprays can be extremely effective but there is an inherent danger in that effectiveness that I think makes them dangerous, if not counterproductive, for some. I would strongly suggest either a stun device or pepper spray for an able bodied, relatively strong senior but for those seniors who are not as strong and fast these weapons could be potentially taken by the assailant and used against the senior. For this reason I think a personal alarm is really the best call as a personal alarm does not work by causing pain or incapacitation to work, as would be the case with either a stun device or defensive spray.

Personal alarms work by emitting an extremely loud distress signal that can be audible up to half a mile away. What this does is draw the attention of anyone in the area and more importantly scares the heck out of the assailant as he or she knows full well that everyone in the area has heard this distress signal and attention has been drawn. Many of these alarms come in the form of keychains which make them not only convenient but also very difficult to forget when leaving the house. So please consider such a device if you are a senior citizen or know one that you would like to protect.

The Electronic Dog Repeller Can Be A Wonderful And Humane Training Tool

In the past, I have made quite a few blog entries concerning the importance of always being prepared and protected from dog attack. I find the need to do so no less important today although I have learned quite a bit about one defense tool I talk about quite a bit and that is the electronic dog repeller. I still find this tool to be a very useful tool of self-defense against potentially dangerous canines but I rarely mention its ability to humanely and effectively train dogs as well. The electronic dog repeller does not work by causing a dog pain but by emitting a high frequency noise, audible only to canines, and flashing strobe which would normally cause an approaching dog temporary confusion and mild discomfort in the hopes of making that dog turn and exit the area. This same high frequency noise and to a lesser degree the flashing strobe can be used to help train a dog and in a sense deter it from any unwanted actions it may be taking.

I want to stress again that I myself have a yellow lab, Kody, that has been with my family and I for a decade now and I love that furry lug like he is one of my own. The electronic dog repeller is not a shock collar and, again, does not cause the animal pain. I believe in raising an obedient and respectful dog but training the dog in a firm but loving way that does not include using pain as a deterrent. I did not even know electronic dog repellers existed when my wife and I brought Kody home as a puppy back in 2002. Had we known of this tool’s existence I think we could have saved quite a bit of time and aggravation on both our parts and had ourselves a well-trained, very obedient dog in much less time.

The electronic dog repeller comes with 2 settings and one is considered a “training setting” but neither the regular setting, that is meant to deter dogs, or the “training setting” which is emits a slightly less audible sound harm the dog in any way, shape or form. In the case of an unknown and potentially dangerous canine approaching it merely causes enough irritation that the dog exits the area. In a situation where a dog is being trained it merely causes enough irritation that the dog stops chewing on the couch (or whatever action it may be taking that you wish it would not) and understands that that is unacceptable behavior.

So please consider the electronic dog repeller not only as a measure of self defense but also as a potential training tool that is both humane and extremely effective.

I Hope Santa Brings Every Security Guard A Stun Baton For Christmas

Security guards are, in my opinion, one of the most misunderstood, underappreciated, and misrepresented professions in the entire world. They are so often portrayed and thought of as being under qualified and lazy when quite often the exact opposite is closer to the truth. Security guards are very often the first, last and only line of defense that a person or business has against intruders and that fact alone necessitates the need for security guards to have some measure of protecting themselves against these intruders.

Firearms are certainly not an option for the vast majority of security guards and for obvious reasons. The qualifications to be a security personnel are often not as strict as those to become a law enforcement agent and we do not need untrained or under qualified personnel roaming about with deadly weapons. Any option for a security guard should certainly be effective, to help protect the security guard, but also non-lethal, to help protect the general public. So where does that leave us? Well, it leaves us with several options for weapons of non-lethal self-defense. Pepper spray and stun guns being the two most prominent and reasonable alternatives to firearms.

Pepper spray is very effective and has the advantage of giving a security guard a safe distance from which to use this weapon as most defensive sprays have an effective range of about 6 to 8 feet. One disadvantage to pepper spray are that an assailant, although somewhat unlikely, could potentially fight through the pain of the pepper spray and continue attacking. Another disadvantage would be that the pepper spray could potentially be wrestled from the guard by the assailant and used against the guard. Stun guns are great because an attacker loses the ability to ‘fight through the pain’ because stun guns do not work on the premise of causing an attacker pain but completely incapacitating them by disrupting their normal neurological processes through the use of a high voltage electrical current. The disadvantage with traditional stun guns is that they lack any range and must be physically touching an attacker in order to work and that means extremely close combat situations which could prove disadvantageous for the guard. It should be noted that stun guns remain non-lethal as the current of electricity that they emit is high voltage but low amperage and it is in fact amps that prove fatal, not volts. This is where the stun baton can prove to be so useful. It combines the advantages of completely incapacitating an assailant with the reach of a pepper spray. The retractable stun baton by Stun Master, for example, measures almost 2 feet when fully extended and that allows the security guard another 2 foot cushion from which to work if he or she should find themselves in a physical confrontation with an intruder.

So if your business has security guards why don’t you do them a huge favor this Christmas and have Santa Claus bring them a stun baton this year. This will help ensure the safety of your security guard, the general public, your business and even the assailant.

All NFL Stadiums Are Looking To Have Handheld Metal Detectors In Place For The 2012 Season

There was recently an article in the Chicago Sun Times regarding the new use of handheld metal detectors at the home of my beloved Chicago Bears, Soldier Field. The brief article mentioned the fact that the uses of these newly implemented handheld metal detectors at two separate gates were perceived by some guests as a nuisance. The article itself was entitled “Bears Fans Cope With Handheld Metal Detectors” and just that title alone makes me cringe and become a bit infuriated at the general public and the ridiculous perception that many of these guests displayed at being ‘made to wait’ for a quick scan by one of these metal detector carrying personnel. I hope these fans, and NFL fans across the country, get used to them quickly because the NFL wants to implement the use of these handheld scanners at all stadiums nationwide as early as next year and for that I salute the NFL. I admit that waiting in a line that has nobody being scanned by a metal detector is going to move quicker than one where everybody is being scanned but I for one would rather wait a bit longer to get inside than to get inside and become the victim of someone carrying a weapon. Thankfully for football fans the league understands this and understands that handheld metal detectors make the stadium much safer for everyone attending. If we should have learned anything by now it is that in this day and age anything can happen to anyone at any time and this certainly includes incidents of gun violence. What I hope all fans will realize and come to accept is that handheld metal detectors are immensely effective at detecting even the tracest amounts of metal objects and that they are certainly more effective, and take the same amount of time, as the traditional pat down that many have become accustomed to at sporting events, concerts and the like. If you do attend an NFL game in 2012 you are likely to see only one brand of metal detector and that is the same one that professional law enforcement agencies have been using for over a decade now, Garrett. They are the best and most reliable detectors today and when it boils down to protecting peoples safety it’s foolish to use any product but one that has been proven to be the best in the industry for many years now.

So again I must compliment the National Football League on their decision to implement the use of what could very well be a life saving device. It’s going to cost them a bit of money to do so but what they will receive in return is the knowledge that every single one of their stadiums is a safer place for family and friends to gather and watch America’s favorite sporting event, football.

Carl Vouer

A Stun Gun Flashlight Can Make A Unique And Useful Christmas Gift

Think back to all of the past Christmas’s you can remember and try to think of one useful gift you have received that you use on a regular basis. I can only think of one offhand and that is the Brookfield Zoo family pass that my dear Mother gifts my family every year with. I would say that family pass saves me about 500 dollars or more a year in discounts and free admission. I would definitely consider that a useful gift and certainly one that I use more than any Christmas sweater I have ever received. No Christmas sweater, regardless of how stylish and handsome they may have been, was going to light my way if the power in my house went out or I was hiking in the woods behind my house at night. You sure as heck aren’t going to see Grandma knit a Christmas sweater that is going to come with an attachable red cone, like the stun gun flashlight does, that helps keep you visible during roadside emergencies at night. If you know how scary and potentially dangerous it can be to have to change a tire on the side of the highway at night then you will know just how splendidly useful something as simple as this attachable roadside emergency cone can be. Now, I have seen some loud Christmas sweaters in my day but I’ve never seen one that is literally and audibly as loud as the 130 decibel alarm that comes with the stun gun flashlight. That’s plenty loud enough to scare a potential attacker silly and draw the attention of anyone in the area. Last but not least if this attacker ignore the alarm and decides to continue his attack I can assure you that no Christmas sweater is going to save you but the 200,000 volt stun mechanism on this stun gun flashlight certainly can. 200,000 volts is more than enough to incapacitate even the most fierce and grinch-iest of attackers.

Seeing as it is Christmas time and a season of giving in general I think it is important to point out that the stun gun flashlight, like all non-lethal self-defense products, is not only non-lethal but should in almost every single case leave your attacker dazed and confused but without any permanent damage or side effects other than possibly instilling a desire to not break the law again, which could prove very beneficial to said attacker if he wants anything good for Christmas next year. So please consider such a device for anyone on your list that you would like the comfort of knowing can be protected from an attacker at all times.

Camping Without Bear Spray? Just Pour Honey All Over Yourself And Charge A Mamma Bear's Cubs

Are you planning on camping in an area that has even the slightest chance of you seeing a bear? Are you planning on doing this camping without having bear spray of any kind on you at all times? If the answer is yes I have another idea for you, why don’t you just douse yourself in honey or hang a raw steak around your neck (or both) and just go charging at the first bear cub you see. It is obvious from the fact that you are not bringing bear spray on your trip that you are the type that throws caution, as well as common sense and basic safety measures, to the wind.

It should be obvious that I am being extremely facetious and by no means should you ever go near a bear and certainly never so much as entertain the idea of approaching a bear’s cub unless your goal is to be mauled to death. As ridiculous as the opening paragraph of this blog was I find it only slightly more ridiculous than even so much as considering the thought of camping without bear spray present. It just doesn’t make any sense not to bring along bear repellent of some kind if there is any chance of seeing a bear where you are camping and when you consider how cheap bear repellent spray is and how easy it is to secure it makes the notion of camping without it that much more ridiculous.

The best thing about bear spray is the simple fact that it is extremely effective, some studies have even shown it to be as effective, if not more effective, than most firearms in thwarting a bear attack. The second best thing about bear spray is that, unlike a firearm, the creature does not have to die in order to save yourself. Let’s remember that we are in the bears home and in almost any attack we are not dealing with a blood-thirsty, man-eating creature but a confused and potentially frightened bear that is doing what it thinks it must to protect itself or it’s offspring (very much like most humans would).

Bear spray works exactly like pepper spray does on humans, in fact the active ingredients are exactly the same. And just as pepper spray is extremely effective on a human attacker so is bear spray on a bear attacker. Bear repellent spray causes intense, but temporary, pain and swelling in the bear’s mucus membranes which can also cause temporary blindness as it can with humans. This gives you ample time to exit the premises immediately and should also have the bear doing the exact same thing in most cases.

So please, for your sake and for the sake of your loved ones, always take bear spray with when going camping in any area where a bear has even the slightest chance of being seen and for the love of all that is holy have it on you at all times. Bear repellent will do you no good if you don’t have it when a bear is ready to attack.

You May As Well Leave Your Door Wide Open If You’re Not Going To Install Apartment Alarms

If you are currently renting an apartment and that is your primary residence I hope that you have already had the presence of mind to install 1 or more, very inexpensive, very basic apartment alarms to secure this apartment. If you have not done so you should probably just leave your door wide open next time you head off to work in the morning. While you are at it why don’t you leave a helpful little note for any potential burglars informing them as to where they can find the most valuable items so that they don’t have to waste any time and can hopefully get away scott free. You could assist these home invaders even more by leaving a dolly for any heavy items that would otherwise take an extra burglar or two to carry. Plus you wouldn’t want any burglar to hurt themselves carrying all of your belongings down to the van so that they can go sell it on the black market, would you? Now before you go and read this and think I am just being a smart aleck, please understand that it is obvious I am joking but to do the things I just mentioned don’t seem too terribly insane compared to not installing something as simple and affordable as an apartment alarm to protect all of your worldly possessions and the peace of mind and feeling of security that doing so can instill.

The truth of the matter is that the vast majority of apartments have no security measures in place to help protect against break in. What makes this fact harder to stomach is that, contrary to belief, an apartment is more likely to be broken into than is a single family home, yet a higher percentage of single family homes have security devices installed and those are much more expensive and much more complicated to install than are your average apartment alarms.

One argument that I hear all too often is the “well I’m not concerned, I have renters insurance”. Really? You aren’t concerned with criminals breaking into the place you sleep (potentially while you are still there sleeping!) and rummaging through your stuff to decide which items to take for themselves? Is your renters insurance policy going to deflect bullets if one of those criminals should happen to have a gun and doesn’t feel like leaving any witnesses when you startle him by walking in on him robbing you? the answer is no it is most certainly not going to stop bullets and for that matter neither will an apartment alarm but what an apartment alarm will do, that a renters insurance policy cannot, is thwart this criminals entry before it even starts.

If a burglar has any brains whatsoever and hears an extremely loud wailing siren go off when he goes to open your door or break a window that burglar is most likely going to turn tail and run like the coward he really is. No burglar wants to be caught or they wouldn’t be very successful burglars now would they? So please do yourself an immense favor and secure an apartment alarm for yourself and install it before it is too late.

Carl Vouer

The Best Self Defense Measure For Senior Citizens Is A Personal Alarm

Being in the business of non-lethal self-defense I have made it my mission in life to protect as many innocent people as I possibly can through the education and implementation of non-lethal self-defense items such as stun devices, defensive sprays, personal alarms and the like. I firmly believe that every law abiding adult should have the right, if not the responsibility to themselves and their family, to carry some form of non-lethal self defense at all times. Oftentimes you will see devices like pepper spray, stun guns and personal alarms geared toward women and seniors and for good reason. The idea is that individuals who may be at a physical disadvantage in the event of an attack should be armed with a device that can help them walk away from such an attack unscathed. Anyone male or female of just about any age could benefit from such devices but I personally focus most of my efforts on educating senior citizens in regards to non-lethal self-defense. Again, anyone could potentially benefit from carrying some form of self-defense but I think senior citizens more than anyone can see this benefit as they are often targeted by scumbag criminals that assume seniors will be an easier target and less capable of physically defending themselves.

There are a multitude of devices that senior citizens can use to help protect themselves in the unfortunate event of an attack but none are safer and easier to use than personal alarms. That is not to say that I don’t think stun devices and/or defensive sprays would not be suitable for many seniors it is just that with stun devices and defensive sprays one runs the risk of potentially injuring themselves in the process of trying to defend themselves. Also stun devices and defensive sprays could potentially be wrestled from a senior and used against them by the attacker, especially if the attacker is considerably stronger and faster than the senior in question.

Personal alarms are wonderful because not only are they absolutely and completely safe but can also be extremely effective, just as effective as a stun device or defensive spray in many cases. Personal alarms work by emitting an extremely loud distress signal and when I use the words ‘extremely loud’ I am talking about 130 decibels or roughly the volume equivalent of standing in the 10th row of the average rock show here. That is more than enough volume to scare the holy heck out of any attacker and send him running in the opposite direction for fear of being seen and apprehended. So if you are a senior citizen, or anyone for that matter, who would enjoy the extra security that carrying a personal alarm can bring, please consider carrying one yourself.

People On Santa’s ‘Nice’ List Deserve A Cell Phone Stun Gun This Year

It’s that time of year again when Jolly Old Saint Nick will be checking his ‘naughty’ and ‘nice’ lists to see who he brings a stocking full of coal and who he brings such wonderful gifts. Hopefully you’ve been good this year and won’t be receiving a stocking full of coal but instead a much wanted gift. Perhaps a game console that you can spend countless hours on, exploring virtual game worlds and avoiding the outdoors like some crazy recluse hermit. Or maybe the gift you would really like Santa to bring down the chimney this year is a new bright orange turtleneck sweater that Santa’s elves (your grandmother) knitted you, thinking you wanted a bright orange, hand-knit turtleneck sweater. If you were really good though you might just awake Christmas morning, look under your tree and fins a gift that you can really use, one that may even potentially save your life one day and that gift is a cell phone stun gun.

Cell phone stun guns are highly effective tools of non-lethal defense disguised as cell phones and I assure you that even on the closest of inspections it is impossible to tell that these things are anything but the cell phones they are pretending to be. What they really are though is a 4.5 million volt stun gun entirely capable of subduing even the biggest and baddest of grinches this holiday season.

Picture this if you will, you are at the mall returning the sweater grandma bought you, it is wintertime so it gets dark early and the parking lot you are in is dimly lit and there is no security surveillance of the lot. You begin to hear footsteps behind you and the pace of these footsteps is beginning to speed up and whoever the feet belong to is obviously heading in your direction and getting closer by the second. You spin around to see a large man wearing a ski mask to hide his identity and although it is cold enough out to warrant a ski mask you know this guy isn’t worried about the cold as much as he is worried about what is in your purse. If Santa had not brought you anything but coal you could be in a a very bad, if not life-threatening, situation at this point. But since you were so good you have in your purse a cell phone stun gun and the grinch in the ski mask now has millions of volts running through his body and will be instantly hitting the ground in a blubbering useless heap and you can make your escape and go get authorities. And because it is the holiday season you needn’t worry about causing your fellow man, even the ones who try to mug you, any long term ill effects as the cell phone stun gun’s current is also a low amperage current and hence will not prove lethal or even cause long term damage.

So this holiday season please consider giving the loved ones on your list something they can really use with a cell phone stun gun.

Know Where To Buy Pepper Spray And Don’t Become A Victim This Holiday Season

It’s that time of year again when the malls are packed with busy little shoppers. The holiday buzz is in the air and last second shoppers are scurrying about, looking for that perfect gift for the special people on their list. Unfortunately, amidst all this cheerful holiday shopping lies a dark truth about this time of year and that is that this time of year leads to an increased number of assaults and robberies, especially in and around malls and specifically mall parking lots. Your common criminal does not care that it is the season of giving; all he sees is an increased number of potential targets walking alone through a dimly lit mall parking lot with a purse full of cash. And if by chance the poor, defenseless shoppers they mug in the parking lot don’t have cash they can always rob these shoppers of their newly purchased gifts.

My point here is to make you aware of the fact that when you are out at the mall shopping this holiday season you may want to take extra precautions to ensure that you do not become another tragic holiday statistic. For one I would definitely shop alone as having a friend with you will always markedly decrease your chances of being targeted by potential criminals and if you must shop alone make sure you park in a well-lit area that has security surveillance of some kind. Last but certainly not least it would behoove you to carry some form of non-lethal self-defense so that if you are confronted by someone that isn’t feeling the holiday spirit you can defend yourself in a safe but effective manner.

You have a few choices when considering non-lethal self-defense tools this holiday season but the one I think that has really proven ideal for just about anyone is a defensive spray. Pepper spray, or mace as some call it even though Mace is a brand of pepper spray, is a highly effective pepper based spray that works by causing severe inflammation, swelling and intense pain to the attackers mucus membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, throat). The effects are temporary and almost never cause any lingering negative side effects which also makes pepper spray not only safe but humane as well. Defensive sprays are also extremely easy to use and require no special training whatsoever which is another reason they are so ideal for just about anyone.

So this holiday season, when you are out there getting your shopping done at the local mall please remember to keep yourself safe and consider carrying a defensive spray of some kind.

This Christmas Let’s Give Seniors The Gift Of Self Defense With A Personal Alarm

Christmas is perhaps my favorite time of year and what’s not to enjoy about Christmas? We get to spend quality time with friends and family, enjoy home cooked meals and exchange heartfelt gifts with one another. The only problem I see with gift giving is that often times we exchange gifts that end up going right back to the store to be returned either because it was the wrong size or the person receiving the gift just wasn’t into whatever the gift was. I mean that is the whole reason we are so often asked if we would like a gift receipt by the person working the register. That is why this Christmas I’d like to suggest that we give a gift to any senior citizens on our list that they will not only want and appreciate but can actually use and that gift is a personal alarm. What better way to show your appreciation for someone special in your life than to give them a gift that could very well save their life one day?

Personal alarms are one of those items that I think just about anyone should own but I really think make ideal tools of self defense for seniors as they require no special training, can be extremely effective in deterring an assault and are completely and utterly safe. Seniors are also at a higher risk of assault than their younger counterparts and that is not only because they may be physically less apt at defending themselves but because criminals know they may be less apt at physically defending themselves. They work by simply emitting an extremely high decibel alarm that works to scare off potential attackers. Many of these alarms come in the form of a keychain which makes them virtually impossible to forget at home and also makes it readily and quickly available in the event of an attack.

Also, it is not just giving the gift of a personal alarm but so much more that you will be giving this holiday season. It is the gift of security, or at the very least the feeling of security that you can be giving to a loved one. Fortunately we live in a rather civilized world (I understand that that comment is open for debate) and the chances that such an alarm would ever have to be used is rather slim but just knowing it is there can offer a very fulfilling feeling for some.

So please consider giving the gift of self defense to any senior citizens on your list this holiday season.

This Thanksgiving Let’s All Be Thankful For The Electronic Dog Repeller

Thanksgiving is a time to sit back with friends and family, stuff ourselves with delicious home cooked meals, and reflect on all of the many things we are thankful for, I for one am thankful that I am not bleeding to death from an open and gaping neck wound given to me by a rabid dog during a random and senseless act of canine violence. Thankfully for me, and others who share the same passion for not being torn to shred by pitbulls, we have electronic dog repellers to keep us safe. You would have to be a real turkey (you like how I through that pun in there?) to walk the streets of any neighborhood without carrying some form of self defense against dogs that may mean you harm and depending on the neighborhood in which you reside, the need for such a device may be an absolute must have item.

Humans are not the only ones who can be thankful for such a device as the electronic dog repeller either. Dogs too should rejoice in the fact that we humans have designed an effective means of self defense against canines that does not involve harming the dog in any way shape or form. You see the electronic dog repeller does not work by spraying a pepper spray into the dogs face but simply by emitting an extremely loud, high decibel alarm and super bright flashing strobe light that both work in conjunction to frighten and confuse the dog. Frightening and confusing a dog are much better than maiming or killing the dog in my opinion, especially if we are unsure of an approaching dogs intent. Let us say for example that a kindly pitbull has somehow gotten out of the yard it was in and is now wandering the streets and has accidentally crossed your path. That may be a scary situation for some but it isn’t necessarily a life threatening one if the pitbull in question is a good dog and means you no harm. If your only defense was pepper spray or a firearm you may not know you’ve seriously injured or killed a kindly beast until it is too late. With an electronic dog repeller you can safely avoid close contact because the high decibel alarm can be effective up to 40 feet, which is also much further than pepper spray can be effective. These devices are so humane in fact that they come with a training setting that can be used to effectively and humanely train your own dog. I think it is safe to say that we can all be thankful for this little piece of technology.

Stun Batons Are Custom Made For Security Personnel

This article is purely my opinion regarding what attributes the ‘perfect weapon’ for security guards should possess and you are more than welcome to agree or disagree. Let’s first determine what the role of security guard means. To me a security guard is not the stereotypical, bumbling, inept slacker that Hollywood always seems to depict. why this stigma has followed security professionals I do not exactly know. Perhaps because many security guards are not college educated or because people assume that they don’t see any “action” while on their post. In reality the role of security professional is, and always has been, an overworked, underpaid, and severely underappreciated one. They are the first, last and very often, only line of defense that a business has against unlawful entry and theft. It is true that the majority of security guards will spend the vast majority of their time, if not all their time, in a state of ‘sitting and waiting’ for something to happen and chances are good that that something will never happen but on the off chance it does these security professionals will be called upon to potentially risk their life to protect the companies physical assets. As such we should make sure that these security professionals are armed with the latest and greatest non-lethal self-defense weapons available.

So now that we have more or less defined what the role of security professional means we should look at what we need to arm these professionals with in order to ensure the safety of the security guard, the company they work for and even the potential assailant they may need to one day deal with. First and foremost any weapon of choice should be non-lethal as we don’t need the average security guard walking around with a loaded handgun. Secondly, the non-lethal security device in question should be effective to help protect the security guard and allow him to do his job to the best of his ability. I can’t think of a more effective non-lethal instrument than the stun baton. Numerous police studies have shown stun devices to be every bit as effective in neutralizing an attacker as a 9 mm handgun and without having to kill, or even injure an assailant, to do so. And stun batons have a massive advantage over traditional stun devices as they have much more reach and hence a security professional does not have to be as close to an attacker and risk having the device taken from him by the attacker. For all of these reasons and more I truly believe that every security guard should be equipped with a stun baton.

Do Not Overlook The Importance of Handheld Metal Detectors

There aren’t many devices that can boast the ability to actually save a life and more often than not these products are tragically overlooked. When you consider how affordable many of these life-saving devices are and how extremely easy they are to use it makes their lack of use that much more tragic. Take seat belts for example, so often we hear of fatal auto accidents involving someone losing their life because they failed to do something as simple as reach over and put their seat belt on. Helmets are another potentially life-saving device that goes overlooked all too often. In my knucklehead state, Illinois, the law requires you wear a seat belt but does not require you wear a helmet when operating a motorcycle. As is to be expected I see a great number of motorcyclists cruising about town with their hair flowing in the wind. Should any of these people get in an accident their chances of survival drop immeasurably because they chose to not wear such a helmet and I pray that these people understand the risks they are taking before it is too late.

Handheld metal detectors are no different than seat belts and helmets in so much as they are an item that can easily be implemented to ensure people’s safety but are all too often overlooked. I have been to more than enough events with multiple unknown attendees, where no security scanning device of any kind was used at the door. This to me seems ludicrous, especially in a day and age where random acts of gun violence can take place anywhere at any time and to anyone. Even if a promoter cared little for the safety of his or her attendees or put little value in human life it would still behoove the promoter to implement security scanning devices like handheld metal detectors so as to avoid the possibility of a potential lawsuit resulting from someone being hurt or killed by a weapon at their event.

Handheld metal detectors also offer not only a more thorough security scan than the old ‘pat down’ method of checking for weapons but also a much faster and socially comfortable method of scanning entrants into any event. If you have ever been to a concert, sporting event or any large gathering where the entrants were being patted down by hand by security you are all too well aware of how long the process can take and how uncomfortable it might be for both the event attendees and the security personnel as well.

So please, if you are planning an event of any size and you know there will be attendees whom you do not personally know, acquire an affordable and reliable handheld metal detector.

The Self Defense Product of the Year Award Goes To the Stun Gun Flashlight

It’s time once again to award one non-lethal self-defense product with the coveted ‘Puzek Security Self Defense Product of the Year’ and this year that award goes to none other than the Stun Gun Flashlight, and what better product to win that award than a product as useful and diverse as this one? Any non-lethal self-defense device should be designed to potentially save someone’s life in the off chance that someone actually finds themselves face to face with a potential assailant but few devices can be as useful as the stun gun flashlight on a day to day basis and even fewer can help protect someone in situations aside from stopping an attacker. All of this said, it seemed a no-brainer that this product would win this year’s award and may just be the winner for years to come.

First and foremost this thing is, as the name would suggest, a flashlight and a very durable, dependable and ultra-bright one at that. So even if you aren’t in need of stopping an attacker (and our hope is that you never will be) you can still find good use in the flashlight itself.

Secondly, it has a detachable red cone that can be used in emergency roadside situations that occur at night. I don’t know if you have ever found yourself stranded on a busy road or highway at night but it can be an extremely unnerving event. The stun gun flashlight’s detachable red warning cone can help extend your visibility to oncoming motorists and ultimately could save your life as being hit by a ton of steel going 65 miles per hour could certainly prove fatal.

Thirdly, this device has a 130 decibel alarm that can help supplement the stun action in terms of protection against attack. If you are wondering how an alarm could possibly stop an attack please allow me to explain. Any criminal who is not literally as dumb as a rock will know that getting caught while committing a crime, purse snatching for example, is not going to be a good thing and will very likely end their criminal career. So any loud noises are going to attract attention and that unwanted attention is sure to bring the police and hence when the criminal will not want to stay in an area where a 130 decibel alarm has just been activated. 130 decibels by the way is roughly the same decibel level as sitting in the 10th row of the average rock concert.

Last but not least this device is, again as the name would suggest, a stun gun. A very powerful 200,000 volt stun device that should prove more than enough to stop even the most vicious and determined attacker. Not just any stun gun but a stun baton really which offers its user a major advantage over traditional stun devices as it gives on the advantage of reach (the stun gun flashlight measures 16.5 inches).

Camping Is Best Enjoyed While Not Being Attacked By Bears

Camping has always been my favorite way to spend my free time. There are just so many wonderful things about camping that I love, the fresh air, preparing fresh caught salmon, the bonfires at night, sleeping under a starlit sky and my absolute favorite, not being dragged out of my tent and mauled to death by bears. To enjoy fresh air I need only bring myself (although quitting smoking has helped in this endeavor as well). To enjoy the salmon I bring the appropriate cooking utensils, fishing pole and tackle box. To enjoy the bonfires I need to remember to bring along waterproof matches and firewood. And to enjoy all of these things without having my camping trip cut short via bear mauling I always make sure to bring along Guard Alaska bear spray.

Bear attacks are not all that common but they do happen and it doesn’t make any sense to ‘play the odds’ and just hope you aren’t confronted by a bear while camping. If you are going to be travelling into areas where there is even the remotest chance of seeing one then please do you and your loved ones a favor by bringing along a proven bear spray. I know Guard Alaska works and I am sure there are some other brands that do as well but the important part is that you have it with you at all times. Bringing along bear spray and having it in the trunk of your car is not going to do you any good if you are out hiking and accidentally find yourself between a half-ton grizzly and her cubs. The mother bear is not going to wait while you trot back to the car to get your bear spray and if she attacks you have an extremely high chance of never camping (or breathing) again.

In all seriousness though it always astounds and saddens me when I read about a bear attack when I know how easy it can be to avoid one. A bear attack of any magnitude, even the ones that don’t prove fatal, can be immensely tragic for not only the victim and the victim’s family but also many times for the bear as it is often hunted down and killed after an attack on a human. Bears for the most part are not out looking for humans to attack, they attack because they feel that they are in danger or that their cubs are in danger. I always feel a deep regret for the bear when it has to die because of what really boils down to the human’s inability to plan or prepare properly before camping in bear populated areas.

So pretty please with sugar on top do not even consider camping in bear populated areas without bringing along, and carrying at all times, a bear spray like Guard Alaska.

Keeping Your Apartment Safe Includes Installing Apartment Alarms

I have found an interesting phenomenon amongst apartment renters and that is that many apartment renters are under the impression that they do not need to install an alarm system to help protect their residence from a potential break in. This is an absolute and potentially dangerous misconception. Studies continue to show that apartments are more often broken into than are single family homes and as such any apartment renter needs to seriously consider installing some kind of apartment alarm system. Such alarm systems are extremely easy to install and cost much less than one would think, making installing an apartment alarm seem like a no-brainer to me.

One of the things that make apartment alarms so much easier to install than an alarm system for a single family home is that with an apartment you usually have much fewer points of entry to concern yourself with. This certainly is the case with apartments that are not on ground level as you really only have to worry about a burglar breaking and entering through one or two doors depending on the layout of the apartment. So for example in a case where there are only two doors to worry about, one could simply hang a motion sensor alarm on each doorknob at night. If a burglar tries either door the ultra-sensitive motion alarm is sure to scare the holy heck out of him and certainly be loud enough to wake you and have you on the phone with the police in no time (hopefully in time to apprehend the low life). Compare the cost of two door guard alarms (which should run about 30 dollars combined) to installing an alarm system in a single family home (which could easily cost thousands of dollars) and the apartment costs literally a fraction of what the home security devices cost.

I was recently at a friend’s apartment and noticed that he had nothing installed in the way of an alarm system. He did not even have so much as a door stop to keep potential intruders from entering his residence and when I asked him about it his reply was “I have renters insurance” and I think this is another common misconception people have. They somehow believe that renters insurance is going to keep burglars out of their home. If you are living in an apartment I beg of you not to think along the same lines as these people. Renters insurance can replace items once they have already been taken but it can never replace the sense of security you felt before a stranger came into your home. The only way to mend that feeling of insecurity is to never feel it in the first place and the best way i know how to do that is by installing an apartment alarm.

Self Defense For Seniors Is As Easy As Buying A Personal Alarm

My passion has always been, and will always remain to be, helping people defend and protect themselves and their families via non-lethal self-defense products. Of all the people that need protection, which is each and every one of us if you really think about it, senior citizens are the people I most often consider. Seniors are often targeted because criminals assume that the average senior citizen will be less apt at defending themselves than the average 25 year old for example. Whether or not this is a fair assumption is not so much the point as is the fact that seniors need to carry some form of self defense as they are in fact a more highly targeted group of people when it comes to petty crime.

One of the best way for a senior citizen to defend themselves against potential attack is to carry a personal alarm at all times. Personal alarms are ideal for senior citizens because unlike stun guns, tasers and defensive sprays, they are entirely safe. Personal alarms are an instrument of self defense that uses no projectiles, electrical charge or harmful spray yet can be every bit as effective as any weapon of self-defense. They simply use a very loud noise (130 decibels or more in most cases) to scare away potential attackers and alert anyone in the area that help may be needed. Most criminals are not looking to be caught and that is why such a loud noise will serve to scare an attacker as he or she will know that the attention of anyone in the area is being directed towards them. Another reason I feel these little alarms are so perfect for seniors is because they take no special training whatsoever as would be the case with a firearm, taser or just about anything that uses a projectile. I would suggest however that anyone carrying a personal alarm practice removing it from wherever you are carrying it (purse, pocket, etc…) and activating the alarm as quickly as possible so that in the event of a real attack the motion becomes automatic. Personal alarms are very small which makes them extremely easy to carry along in a purse or pocket. Many even come in the form of a keychain, making them virtually impossible to forget when a senior citizen leaves the house.

So if you are a senior citizen yourself or are looking for that perfect, inexpensive gift idea for any senior citizens you may know, please keep personal alarms in mind as they really are the perfect item of self-defense for seniors.

My Top 10 Favorite Stun Devices: #10 – Cell Phone Stun Gun…

Being in the business of non-lethal self defense it is safe to say that self-defense devices are my passion. As such I have decided to come up with a list of my top ten favorite non-lethal self-defense stun devices of all time and here they are…

10.  Cell Phone stun gun

The Cell Phone stun gun is an incognito, amazingly powerful 4.5 million volt stun gun that looks exactly like a cell phone upon even the closest of inspections.

9.  Stun Master 300,000 Volt Stun Device

An original made by the godfathers of the industry, Stun Master. These devices will last you a lifetime and be as reliable the first time you use it as they will be 30 years from now.

8.  Double Trouble Stun Gun

The Double Trouble Stun Gun is great because its molded in a way that makes it almost impossible to have taken from you and more importantly has twice the space between contacts as a regular stun gun. This increased space between contacts makes it more powerful and gives you more area with which to touch, and consequently subdue, an assailant.

7.  Knuckle Blaster Stun Device

Okay, I like this one mostly because it just looks like something that anyone wishing to attack you would not want to tangle with under any circumstance.

6. Stun Master Hot Shot Stun Device

Small, compact and packs a massive wallop at 4.5 million volts. Also, and maybe most importantly, it is made by Stun Master who has been a leader in the industry for almost 30 years now.

5.  Stun Master Multi-Function Stun Device

It’s a powerful 4.5 million volts which will be more than enough to stop any attacker that isn’t literally a full grown Asian Elephant. It is also a flashlight, has red flashing emergency lights and has a built in 130 decibel alarm and is made by Stun Master, what more could you want?

4.  Runt stun gun

Another ultra-powerful 4.5 million volt stun device. This one is so small it can’t even be seen while holding it in your hand. It is also rechargeable which means no money spent on constantly buying expensive batteries.

3.  Stun Master Pen Stun Device

Extremely portable as it is the size of a magic marker and will fit in just about any pocket. Size does not equal power in this case as this little device still packs a walloping 1.2 million volts which will floor even the toughest of attackers with ease. It also has a flashlight and is rechargeable.

2.  Stun Master Telescopic Stun Baton

In my opinion a stun baton like this will always be vastly superior to a traditional stun device because of its reach, power and contact space. It’s always best if you are able to subdue an attacker without having to get as close to that attacker as you would with a regular stun device.

1.  Stun Gun Flashlight

Like the stun baton this thing gives you optimal reach and really is a ‘stun baton’ in that sense. Unlike the stun baton though this contraption gives you a super bright flashlight, attachable red cone for roadside emergencies and a super loud alarm to help scare an attacker away before you have to hit him with 200,000 volts of attitude adjusting electricity.

So that is my list and I’m sticking to it. Next week I will perhaps rank my top 10 defensive sprays of all time. So until then…

What Makes Better Self Defense, Stun Guns Or Pepper Spray?

When choosing to carry a tool of non-lethal self-defense (which by the way I think is a great idea for every responsible, law-abiding, citizen) the question that most often arises is which product works best. The 2 most popular forms of non-lethal self-defense certainly seem to be stun guns and pepper spray and between these 2 you have advantages and disadvantages over the other. As such it isn’t so easy to answer the question ‘which is best?’ because it will often depend on what exactly you are looking for and who will be carrying these items. So let us discuss both and the advantages that either one may have over the other and perhaps you can decide for yourself which would be more beneficial to you personally.

Let us talk about stun guns first. Stun devices work by emitting a high-voltage electrical charge that disrupts the central nervous system of an attacker, rendering him or her helpless to continue the attack as they are no longer in control of their own motor functions. These devices are wonderfully effective and one distinct advantage that I can see with a stun device is that the attacker cannot ‘work through the pain’ and continue attacking because a stun gun doesn’t really work by distributing pain so much as just attacking the nervous system and putting down an attacker regardless of that attacker’s pain threshold. This also helps if the attacker is high on drugs as the electrical charge to the nervous system will work the same way it would with someone who is not on drugs. One major disadvantage to a stun device is that unlike with a Taser there are no projectiles and hence a stun device has very limited range. The stun gun must actually be physically touching an attacker to work and that can make for a potentially hairy situation if the person using the stun device is considerably slower and/or weaker than the attacker. This makes stun guns a better choice for someone of decent physical shape.

Stun Device Advantage: Highly reliable and effective against any attacker. Disadvantage: Range

Pepper spray can also be very effective. Pepper spray works by emitting a spray that swells mucus membranes of an attacker and causes intense pain and burning in those mucus membranes. This includes the eyes (which can cause temporary blindness), nose, mouth, throat and lungs. The advantage that pepper spray has over a stun device is without question its range. Most defensive sprays have about a 6-8 foot range wherein they can be effective (depending on wind conditions and what have you). The disadvantage can be that if the spray is not directly sprayed in the assailants face the assailant can continue to attack and even if they are sprayed in the face there is a chance the attacker, unlike with a stun gun, can ‘work through’ the pain and continue to attack. These may be a better choice than a stun gun for elderly people or for people who will be considerably slower than and/or not as strong as their potential attacker.

Pepper Spray Advantage: Range Disadvantage: May not be as effective as a stun device.

Both of these items can be very reliable life savers and I would certainly recommend one or the other to just about anyone looking to feel secure while walking the streets of this fine nation. I didn’t mention price as a disadvantage for either as they are both extremely affordable. Hopefully I’ve explained the advantages and disadvantages of each with enough clarity for you to make your own choice as to which would work best for you.

Carl Vouer

If You Are A Senior And Want To Defend Yourself Try A Personal Keychain Alarm

I continue to be astonished that there are senior citizens walking around without any measure of self defense whatsoever aside from just assuming that they will never be attacked. Hopefully that is true and statistically speaking the chances are in the average senior citizen’s favor that they won’t be involved in a physical altercation but that doesn’t mean one should not take extremely easy and affordable measures to ensure their safety should such an attack take place. By far the easiest, safest, most humane and cost-effective measure that any senior can take to ensure his or her own safety is by purchasing a personal alarm of some kind. Most of these personal alarms come in the form of a very small keychain alarm.

So how do these keychain alarms work and are they in fact effective in thwarting an attack at all? They work by emitting an extremely loud audible alarm that can be heard up to, and in some cases more than, a quarter mile away. That should answer the second part of that question with a resounding yes; they are effective in thwarting a potential attack. The premise with which these devices work upon is a very simple one and that is the notion that criminals and other would-be attackers do not want to be caught breaking the law. As such there is no criminal or would-be attacker that is going to want any attention drawn their way after they begin attacking someone and there isn’t anything that is going to draw the attention of others more than a really loud noise. So once a senior citizen finds themselves in a precarious situation involving another individual that is ready to attack them they would simply push a button and an ear splitting alarm emits. That ear splitting alarm is going to draw loads of attention at any time of night or day and that attention is what is going to scare the assailant away. Even if the alarm doesn’t scare the attacker away it will at the very least draw the attention of people that can help. All of this gives the senior a far greater chance of surviving such an attack unscathed then would be the case if the senior had no personal alarm.

Okay, if you are a senior and are still not convinced that carrying one of these keychain alarms is the best thing to do then let me add that most of these keychain alarms come with a built in flashlight. How could having a flashlight on your keychain not be helpful and if that’s what you need to hear to help you understand that one of these devices is absolutely imperative than I hope I’ve done my job.

Do Electronic Dog Repellers Really Work And If So How?

I have been asked many times by many customers whether or not a particular item really works and the one product that seems to illicit that question the most is the electronic dog repeller. For whatever reason people are leery of accepting the fact that a dog could be deterred with nothing more than noise and light, especially when that noise isn’t even audible to humans. So to answer this question and put to bed any doubts about electronic dog repellers the answer is indubitably yes, they do work. With that said these repellers have limitations and should by no means be the be all and end all in protecting yourself from a canine attack. Nor should one go looking to test these things in a real life situation as once again, they do have their limitations and are not guaranteed to save your hide should you find yourself being attacked by a rabid dog. Of course having such a device is immensely helpful as they can be very effective and certainly much better than having no defense at all.

Electronic dog repellers have some pros and cons in comparison to pepper spray, which is another other popular self-defense weapon against dogs. First and foremost, the electronic dog repeller has a better range from which to be effective in deterring dogs. The ultra-high frequency squeal and flashing strobe that most of these repellers have can be effective from quite a distance whereas a pepper spray really only has an effective range of 6-8 feet in most cases. The con is that if a dog has decided it is going to attack you and is in a full charge I think the pepper spray will prove to be a much more effective deterrent as spray will literally blind the dog temporarily and cause it intense yet temporary pain whereas the electronic repeller will cause no actual pain or blindness. The electronic dog repellers high frequency squeal and flashing strobe are meant only to confuse the dog, which makes it very effective if the dog is at a distance of say 50-100 feet. The dog repeller in fact is so humane an alternative that it can also be used to help train dogs in a humane yet effective manner. That is, once again, because the repeller does not harm the dog nor causes it pain in any way (other than maybe hurting its ears at a close distance).

So if you live in a neighborhood where dogs are present, especially if you are a runner or just liek to take walks in the area, please do yourself a favor and consider a dog repellent of some kind. An electronic dog repeller can and will be effective so it would not hurt to consider obtaining one.

Stun Batons Share The Same Advantage Over Traditional Stun Devices As a Boxer Over His Opponent

I have always been a fan of boxing and if you are too you will notice there are always certain physical attributes that are compared for each fighter before the fight. First of all there are weight classes so weight is certainly one attribute that could be considered an advantage in a fight. Height is another and you will almost always see that comparison listed in a brief screenshot right before the fight. So height to a lesser degree than weight could certainly be an advantage for a boxer but it’s not height as much as it is another physical attribute that usually gives a taller boxer an advantage over a shorter boxer and that is reach. The reason is simple, if Boxer A doesn’t have to be standing as close to Boxer B as Boxer B does to Boxer A in order to land a punch than Boxer A is going to have a clear advantage.

This same principle applies to stun devices and stun batons share the exact same advantage over traditional stun guns. That advantage being that an individual does not need to be standing as close to an attacker as they would with a traditional stun device in order for a baton to be effective. With any stun device, including a stun baton, the contacts (the area of the device that actually emits the electrical charge) needs to be touching an attacker in order for the device to do it’s job, which is shock and subdue the attacker. This can be a stressful situation for even the strongest and fastest of civilians but even more so for someone that may not be as strong and fast as their attacker as there is a possibility that the device could be wrestled away and even used on the person carrying the stun gun in the first place. With a stun baton that stress can be relieved to some degree because you’ve now got not only arms reach on your attacker but two arms reach. The Stun Master telescopic baton, for example, is almost 2 feet long when fully extended and unless your attacker is the Jolly Green Giant he or she is going to have an immense amount of difficulty getting to you before the baton touches them and renders them completely incapacitated.

Reach is not the only advantage that a stun baton has over a traditional device either. Contact space (again the area of the device that does the actual shocking) is much greater on a baton than on a traditional stun device. Most stun guns have about 2.5 inches of contact and that 2.5 inches needs to be touching an attacker in order to work, whereas a stun baton gives its user an average of 18 inches to touch an attacker and be effective.

So if you are considering a stun device for your own protection I hope that you will consider these facts before making a purchase.

Please Don’t Use Metal Detectors If You Want People To Get Shot At Your Next Event

I don’t want to tell you how to organize your party or event but I can offer one very valuable tip to any event organizer that would like to be sued for everything he or she owns with a wrongful death lawsuit and that is to make sure they do not implement the use of handheld metal detectors at each and every entrance. Not having a reliable handheld metal detector at the door is a great way to ensure that someone sneaks in with a weapon of some kind. After all nobody can be shot or stabbed at your next event if nobody smuggles in a gun or knife with which to do so. And it’s going to make it impossible for someone to smuggle in a knife or gun if you’ve got pesky security guards protecting the well-being of attendees by scanning everyone at the door. The best way to make sure somebody receives a mortal injury while at your event is to simply let a multitude of strangers in and just hope that nobody has brought a weapon.

Certainly you should not use a trusted name in the industry like Garrett as that brand is so reliable it is used by security details, law enforcement and military personnel worldwide. A Garret handheld metal detector is so highly sensitive it can pick up even the most trace amounts of metal and would easily detect even the smallest of weapons and then nobody would be getting shot or stabbed. They are self-calibrating which means that unlike less reliable models they do not need to have their sensitivity settings constantly adjusted, great if you want to keep your guests safe and sound and not be sued, horrible if you want utter chaos, multiple gun shots and a monster law suit.

Okay, obviously this article is ridiculous and I am clearly being sarcastic but what I find truly ridiculous is that anyone would organize a major event in this day and age and not use simple, affordable and reliable technology to ensure the safety of their guests. Having a major event and then neglecting to keep the guests that attend safe in a simple and cost effective manner is both ignorant and wholly irresponsible. If you are a promoter you should make sure than any security detail you hire has one of these if for no other reason that the legal ramifications of someone being hurt or killed at your event because such security measures were ignored.

Stun Gun Flashlights Are Perfect For Security Guards

Security guards are often portrayed as lazy, overweight, bumbling, and altogether inept when it comes to actually securing the place they are being paid to do so. I have worked as a security guard and still have some friends that are security personnel and I can say that I find that stereotype to be quite misleading and not a very realistic description of myself or the guys I know that are security guards. I think that stereotype derives from the fact that many security guards will never see any real “action” and will never have to use force to secure and protect an area but any security guard could potentially be called to do so at any time and many other professions will never understand the stress that goes along with that knowledge. Not to mention that some security personnel, depending on where they work, may see “action” quite a bit and have had to , or will have to, use force on multiple occasions to secure and protect. In cases like this we should give them every advantage to do so in the safest, most effective and humane way possible. This is why I feel the stun gun flashlight might just be the perfect tool for any security guard and I believe that for multiple reasons.

First and foremost the device is exactly what it says it is and that is a flashlight. What security personnel working at night couldn’t use a flashlight? A flashlight might very well be the most oft used tool in security guard history. Second, the device comes with a 130 decibel alarm that can be used to both deter unwanted trespassers and at the very least alert other security personnel that trespassers are on the grounds and that help may be needed. This alarm is also of great benefit to security guards and their employers as any altercation is best ended without getting physical and an alarm like this can certainly increase the chances that an altercation does end without it getting physical or anyone being injured.

Last but by no means least the device is a 200,000 volt stun baton, a far superior device to a traditional stun gun due to its reach. Again, it is obviously best for all parties involved if any and all altercations end without things getting physical as it assures that nobody is injured but what should a security guard do if things do need to get physical? The best bet is to have a weapon that is every bit as effective as possible but also humane enough to not leave a trespasser or assailant with any serious or lingering injuries. Stun devices do that by incapacitating an attacker with a high voltage blast of electricity but remains non-lethal by keeping that current of electricity low amperage. This can also avoid the security guard’s employer from being sued in a wrongful death or injury lawsuit.

What Should I Bring Camping If I Hate Being Mauled By Bears?

I don’t know how many times I have been asked “What should I bring camping if I hate being mauled to death by half ton grizzly bears?”. Okay, in fairness I have never actually been asked that question and it is pretty ludicrous to assume I ever will but in my opinion it would be no more ludicrous than actually going camping in bear populated areas without bear spray.

Every now and then I will stumble upon a tragic story of some unfortunate soul who was severely and permanently scarred, both physically and mentally, by a black or grizzly bear while camping in bear populated areas without proper protection from said bears. What makes these stories even more tragic is that avoiding such catastrophic events is so very simple. Anyone that wants to camp, hike, or spend any time in bear populated areas needs to purchase and carry at all times a bear spray that is proven effective. I can only attest to the proven effectiveness of two such sprays and those two are Guard Alaska brand and a bear repellent spray from Mace. I have seen videos of both of these sprays in action and after viewing both videos I would personally be confident in either. There may very well be other brands out there that are just as effective but as I have not seen proof of any others I can not in good conscience recommend other brands at this time.

Bear spray works in very much the same way as does pepper sprays meant to thwart the attack of human assailants, in fact the active ingredient in both bear spray and human pepper spray are exactly the same, Oleoresin Capsicum. More or less Oleoresin Capsicum is the thin that gives hot peppers their “hotness”. Of course we are also talking about this ingredient in a much more concentrated form than you will find in even the hottest of peppers. When concentrated Oleoresin Capsicum hits the mucus membranes (eyes, nose, throat, etc…) of just about any of God’s creatures it will not only swell those membranes and cause temporary blindness but also an immense burning sensation that causes such temporary pain that the animal will almost always retreat. This will give you enough time to exit the area safely and hopefully in a hurry.

The last thing I’ll say about bringing along a bear spray when camping is that it absolutely must be on your person at all times. If it is not then having it in the first place is of little use as a bear attack is not usually something that we get advanced notice of and I don’t know many wild bears that will wait patiently while you search your tent. So please secure said bear spray and for the love of all that is holy have that bear spray in an easily accessible location (like a holster) at all times.

Renting For Dummies: Install Apartment Alarms

In previous blogs I’ve tried to make it abundantly clear that the average apartment or condo renter is much more likely to be the victim of a breaking and entering crime than is the average individual living in a single family home. Although this is contrary to popular belief it is a misconception that remains to be overlooked and as such many apartment renters wind up suffering a fate that could have easily been avoided had a simple, cost-effective and easy-to-install alarm been put in place.

One thing I always tell customers is that the items that are often taken from an apartment during a burglary is really secondary compared to the lost sense of security we should all enjoy in the comfort of our own homes. Renters insurance will often replace monetary losses but nothing will repair the feeling of insecurity one naturally feels after he or she has been the victim of a burglary. So to avoid these feelings of dangerous insecurity all renters should take the simple step of installing some form of apartment alarm.

Aside from how inexpensive these alarms are they are also extremely easy to install yourself and take almost no time to do so. This also is an advantage renters that wish to install a security system have over those that live in a single family home. If a home dweller wishes to install a security system it is most likely something that is going to cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars to do. The main reason for this is because the average apartment or condo has less square footage to secure and more importantly have fewer points of entry than the average single family home, especially those apartments or condos that are not on the ground level. Apartment dwellers have devices like the door guard alarm for example, this device is an alarm you simply hang over the door knob of any door and when the slightest bit of vibration or movement is detected an extremely loud 130 decibel alarm will sound and no doubt scare even the most foolish of intruders away.

So if you are renting please be sure to take the small amount of time, effort, and money to not only purchase a renters insurance policy but to install some apartment alarms to ensure that you will never have to know the sinking feeling that occurs when you try to go to sleep the night after a break in has occurred at your residence.

Practical Self Defense for Seniors Should Be Less About Karate and More About Personal Alarms

I don’t know if it is due to the rising popularity of mixed martial arts, the growing senior citizen population or a culmination of several things but for whatever reason I see more and more self-defense classes advertised and many of these classes are geared towards seniors. I think it is great if people want to take self-defense classes as such classes include several benefits for the participant. Confidence, better health, and a better ability to defend one’s self in the event of an attack being the most obvious benefits. But are these classes, especially those geared towards seniors, going to be enough to really save a senior citizen in the event of a real life attack? Are such classes really practical for seniors?

Again, I want to make it clear that I think a self-defense class is a great idea for people of any age but when it comes to people of an advanced age we should look a little deeper than a self defense class when considering means of self-defense. How much can be taught to an 80 year old woman in a self defense class that is really going to translate to that woman really being able to defend herself against a 6’2″ 230 pound attacker? Nothing. Even if that woman began training in her teens and was a multiple degree black belt by the time she was 80 she is going to have a rough go of things against a much younger, faster, bigger and stronger attacker. That is why although these seniors could certainly benefit from such classes they should by no means let what is taught in these classes be their only line of defense against potential attack. So what can these senior citizens do to help improve their chances of surviving such an attack in a more practical and potentially more effective way? The answer to that question is simple, personal alarms.

Personal alarms are great for senior citizens for a few reasons. One, they are very small, light, and easy-to-carry making them ideal for people of an advanced age. Two, they are easy to use and require zero special training. And last but not least they are entirely safe for all parties involved unlike other more traditional forms of self defense like stun guns, pepper spray or firearms.

Just how effective can an instrument be that doesn’t physically subdue an attacker? Extremely effective is the answer to that question and let me explain why this is. A personal alarm works by simply letting out a distress call that can be heard for up to a mile away in some cases. The majority of personal alarms that I’ve come in contact with register around 115-135 decibels and let me tell you just how loud 130 decibels is, for comparison a rock concert from the 10th row registers about 125 decibels. So if some dirt-bag attacker is in the mood to mug an old lady for her purse and from that purse the old lady pulls out a personal alarm and lets out a 130 decibel siren? I can tell you right now that there is a very good chance that attacker knows the jig is up and it’s time for him to start running in some other direction before the long arm of the law shows up. Extremely loud noises attract the attention of others and that is precisely what any criminal does not want.

So please feel free to take self-defense classes as I think they can only improve your chances of surviving an attack but don’t let the martial arts you learn be your only line of defense and certainly don’t let that be the case if you are a senior citizen.
